De La Soul returns with 20 brand new tracks on
“Impossible Mission”. Narrated by De La
themselves, Posdnuos, Trugoy, and Maseo explain
what “Buhloone Mindstate” they were in when they
recorded each track. De La Soul’s debut album, “3
Feet High and Rising” (1989), was an instant
smash that saw the group labeled as “hippies” due
to the message of peace and love. They quickly
became prominent members of the Zulu Nation,
along with A Tribe Called Quest, Black Sheep,
Queen Latifah, The Jungle Brothers and others.
They were also members of the famed Native
Tongues Posse and mentioned the group often in
their music. “Me, Myself and I” became a huge hit,
further cementing the group’s popularity. De La’s
follow-up albums, “De La Soul Is Dead” (1991),
“Buhloone Mindstate” (1993), “Stakes Is High”
(1996), “AOI: Mosaic Thump” (2000), “AOI: Bionix”
(2001), and “The Grind Date” (2004) were all
critically-acclaimed releases.
In 2006 we get yet another installment of the De La
genius with their new release, “Impossible Mission”.
Standout cuts on “Impossible Mission” include “Live
@ The Dugout ’87,” “Voodoo Circus,” “Friends,”
and the ultra funky “You Got It.”
The IV Thieves evolved from the band
Nic Armstrong And The Thieves. While
recording the follow up to their critically
acclaimed debut CD, The Greatest White
Liar, all band members took a hand at
songwriting and lead vocal duties. That
evolution led the band to decide they
needed a name change, hence the IV
Thieves. After touring with Oasis, The
Pretenders, Jet, The Bravery, Mercury
Rev, Louis XIV and more, the band won
over music fans and the hard to impress
music press. Rolling Stone hailed them
as the band to watch and included them
on their Hot List.
“Knife-blade-treble guitars and the
vengeful crash of early Who and Kinks”
- Rolling Stone
“They’ll be one of the biggest bands. They’re
pretty special men” – Noel Gallagher, Oasis
“These four lads from Nottingham prove that
British rock is alive and kicking..like
watching Oasis combined with Supergrass”
Since the early 90’s, Kitaro’s music has
evolved further with an astonishing run of 26
albums for longtime home Domo Records,
garnering both critical and commercial
success. The best moments of that tenure
are contained herin with tracks that reveal the
depth of a singular and lasting artistry and
stand as a testament to Kitaro’s enduring
imagination.
The sheer breadth of Kitaro’s eclecticism is
on full display here, with selections from his
essential soundtrack work collected on The
Best of Silk Road and 2002’s The Soong
Sisters, to his Broadway score for Cirque
Ingenieux, as well as more personal creations
such as the two-volume Sacred Journey of
Kukai, a surprising melting pot of prog-rock
guitar, haunting woodwinds, snippets of
nature sounds and even Buddhist monk
chanting.
Though his studio output is indispensable, it’s
the live realm where Kitaro really shines.
Thus, the DVD that complements this CD
collection contains stunning footage of two very
different but equally epic performances: a 1999
concert in Spain and a 2004 show in China,
both demonstrating that Kitaro’s music truly
crosses borders to deliver a universal message.
Biz Markie’s inclination toward juvenile humor and
his fondness for goofy, tuneless, half-sung
choruses camouflaged his true talents as a
freestyle rhymer. The Biz may not have been able
to translate his wild rhyming talents to tape, but
what he did record was worthwhile in its own way.
With his silly humor and inventive, sample-laden
productions, he proved that hip-hop could be funny
and melodic, without sacrificing its street credibility.
A native of New York, Biz (born Marcel Hall) first
came to prominence in the early ‘80s, when he
began rapping at Manhattan nightclubs like the
Funhouse and the Roxy and following the
legendary Juice Crew all over the country. Biz met
producer Marley Marl in 1985, and began working
as a human beatbox for Marl-connected acts MC
Shan and, later, Roxanne Shanté. He also
recorded his first set of demos, and by 1988, had
signed with Cold Chillin’.
This album was original released as a single vinyl
EP only. It is not until now that these songs have
It’s almost impossible to overstate the
impact and importance of Fela Kuti to the
global musical village.
Throughout a career that began with the
London jazz scene and the uptown
Nigerian music highlife in the 1950’s,
Fela Kuti peaked with the devoutly
oppositional Afrobeat in the 1970’s, and
inspired countless artists ever since he
lived out the warcry “music is the
weapon” like no other musician. It’s no
exaggeration to say that Fela is to
African Music what Marley is to Reggae.
FELA KUTI
"Monkey Banana...." reflects
a time during which Fela's
music was moving even more
into long extended grooves.
Both "Monkey Banana" and
"Sense Wiseness," have his
characteristic blends of
improvisational-sounding
trades between various
instruments and lead and
chanting backup vocals,
along with his minor-based
melodies. Excuse O is one of
the better cuts from his mid-
1970s discography, with
remarkably spooky, effective
organ, a slow ominous
groove, and a blunt critique of
Africa's educational system.
Everything Scatter tenminute
title track posits
Kuti and his followers
versus the status quo. The
15-minute "Who No Know
Go Know" strikes a more
relaxed groove in its call
for African unity. "Noise
for Vendor Mouth" puts
some more emphasis on
the choppy, lean, funk-ish
guitars than some other
Kuti cuts. "Mattress" goes
a little further afield in its
controversial subject
matter, here reflecting his
polygamous lifestyle.
8 75232 00412 2
An unusual item in Fela's
discography - "Upside
Down" is sung by Sandra
Akanke Isidore. - the
woman Fela met during his
stay in the United States at
the end of the 1960s, and
who is credited with helping
to elevate his own social
awareness and ethnic
identity. It makes for
something refreshingly
different. "Music of many..."
is utter genius, musical
history and at first glance
completely unlikely: a
collaboration with vibist and
innovator, Roy Ayers.
Two of the most notable
albums from the mid-'70s.
Lyrical skill in abundance,
and at the height of his
instrumental power, Fela
employs 3 languages to
describe the confusion
inherent in the
marketplace of Lagos'
Ojuelegba area. Confusion
is an Afrobeat epic. No
less a masterpiece - and
the first time Fela played
the most innovative of
Fela's Africa '70 material.
Few are the pioneering musicians who have
managed to invent a whole new style or
musical language, but how many have ever
invented a new bona-fide verbal language
Composer, singer, writer, poet and spiritualist
Julien Jacob has done exactly that: his own
imaginary language, inspired by the timbre
and vibration of words, is intended to release
the listener and allow him to interpret the
song in his own way.
Hailing from Benin (West Africa), but now
living in France, he inhabits, along with his
label mate and collaborator Rachid Taha, the
creative hinterland between cultures.
After discovering rock and jazz in his youth,
Jacob pursued growing interests in literature,
poetry and spirituality. He hung out with
musical heroes like Fela Kuti, Miles Davis and
Al Jarreau and then moved to Paris to develop
his music. In the mid 1990’s he finally settled in
Brittany where he wrote a series of books and a
huge trove of songs.
Cotonou is palpably African but also distinctly
unlike any African music you’ve ever heard, full
of original pan-continental nuances, twists and
off-beat musings of a very rich imagination.
Hamilton has a sweet choirboy voice that
-SEE MAGAZINE, EDMONTON
“Woodpigeon is a welcome breath of fresh air
with a stage-cramming line-up and a diverse
arsenal of musical equipment… Whether the
songs are stripped down to bare essentials, or
Composer, singer, poet
towering legend of
Brazilian music, possibly
even the greatest Brazilian
musician of the 20th
Century. Although he was
a contemporary of
tropicalia artists like
Caetano Veloso and
turbulent 60s, he never
adopted their poporientated
MAIN FLOW(Mood) and Boston
beatsmith 7L. Flow Season
“The Show”. With MAIN FLOW
constantly touring the globe and
collaborating with everyone from DJ
Lethal, Talib Kweli, Scott Storch to
Planet Asia & Killah Priest and 7L’s
In the vein of Boston bred hip hop
renaissance men like Insight and
Edan, Raydar Ellis is most
comfortable making music on his
own terms, rhyming, producing,
scratching and even mixing his own
joints. With a refreshing album full
of intelligent rhymes, soulful
production, positive thoughts, laugh
out loud humour and themed skits
that would make Prince Paul proud,
“Late Pass’ is destined to have
something for everyone.
Supporting Ellis on the vocal tip are
Boston MC’s Edo. G and 7L and
Esoteric and newer school
wordsmiths Project Move as well as
Raydar’s Short Bus Crew. Raydar
Ellis was part of the Beats For
Peace tour with Slum Village,
Medusa, Supernatural and Cee-lo.
