FORWARD This directory is an initiative of Diversicare, the community aged care division of Ethnic Communities Council of Queensland. The directory was the result of an initiative undertaken by Diversicare to profile the German-speaking older community in the south east. This project was funded by the joint Commonwealth and State Home and Community Care (HACC) program, Queensland. Combined together, Queenslanders who were born in the German speaking countries of Germany, Austria and Switzerland, form one of this State’s largest linguistic/cultural groups as well as represent a sizable group of Queensland’s ethnic Seniors population. Individuals born in Germany and aged 60+ years number 7358 individuals (ABS 2001) the second highest ageing ethnic group in the State after Italian born individuals (9631). Persons aged 60 years and over who are born in Austria and Switzerland were 1273 and 493 respectively. Although a sizable community their visibility is low (as communities) and utilization of services for seniors is somewhat unclear. It has been in some part as a response to this situation as well as requests to Diversicare to locate "German appropriate" assistance for older individuals that our organisation has embarked upon the profiling project and the putting together of the directory. This directory lists services and resources available, eg. social groups/food outlets in the above mentioned communities. Knowledge of these resources may assist home and aged care services meet some of the needs of their German- speaking clientele particularly around the issue of lifestyle cultural need and well being. This knowledge may also assist services in meeting national service standards as they pertain to the issue of cultural and linguistic needs. In an effort to maintain the accuracy of this directory and improve its contents, for all stake holders, we encourage readers to complete the feedback form on the last page to inform us of any inaccuracies or other resources available.
