4. <strong>The</strong> Contrasting Lexicalization Patterns <strong>of</strong> a Shared Extended Use<br />

One <strong>of</strong> the most frequent extended uses both in <strong>Swedish</strong> and English is the use <strong>of</strong> the verb<br />

‘give’ in combination with a noun describing an act <strong>of</strong> verbal communication. At a <strong>ge</strong>neral<br />

level, the two langua<strong>ge</strong>s follow the same pattern. <strong>The</strong>re is, however, much variation with<br />

respect to which nouns within this semantic field can appear in such combinations. Table 6a<br />
