High <strong>School</strong> <strong>After</strong>-<strong>School</strong> Programs Increase<br />
<strong>School</strong> Success, Civic Participation and<br />
Positive Youth Development<br />
Research shows that after-school programs<br />
not only prevent crime and other risky<br />
behaviors, but also improve academic<br />
achievement, promote civic participation and<br />
provide the experiences and opportunities<br />
teens need to succeed. <strong>After</strong>-school programs<br />
keep teens out of trouble by provid<strong>in</strong>g them<br />
with positive new relationships with adults and<br />
peers; new social, employment and academic<br />
skills; and new opportunities to practice<br />
positive behaviors. They succeed not by<br />
focus<strong>in</strong>g on what young people are do<strong>in</strong>g<br />
wrong, but <strong>in</strong>stead by focus<strong>in</strong>g on provid<strong>in</strong>g<br />
the experiences young people need to succeed.<br />
To those on the front l<strong>in</strong>es fight<strong>in</strong>g crime, the<br />
academic and other benefits of after-school<br />
programs are important. Research shows that<br />
teens who are <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> school and do well<br />
academically, as well as those with positive<br />
experiences and opportunities, are less likely to<br />
engage <strong>in</strong> crim<strong>in</strong>al behavior. 34<br />
The benefits of after-school programs for<br />
teens <strong>in</strong>clude:<br />
Academic Achievement and Dropout<br />
Prevention<br />
Research shows that quality after-school<br />
programs improve academic performance and<br />
cut dropout rates. In California:<br />
• Eighty-n<strong>in</strong>e percent of high school<br />
students at the Panorama Teen & Family<br />
Resource Center <strong>in</strong> San Diego County<br />
improved their GPA dur<strong>in</strong>g the year they<br />
participated, and the average <strong>in</strong>crease for all<br />
students was nearly one grade po<strong>in</strong>t (0.74)—<br />
from 1.95 GPA to 2.69 GPA. The program<br />
provides homework assistance, college<br />
preparation, and life skills classes. 35<br />
• Of the regular participants <strong>in</strong> the LA<br />
COPS after-school program at five Los Angeles<br />
high schools, over half improved their grades <strong>in</strong><br />
English while few reported decreased grades,<br />
and over 75 percent of English teachers<br />
