Singapore Study Tour 2013
Exploring the Keys of IT Development in Singapore *
Thirty students from the Division of Applied
Science and Technology # joined a Singapore
Study Tour on 29-31 May 2013. The tour was led
by Dr. Desmond Tsoi (Programme Leader of
Associate of Science in Information Systems
Development) and Dr. Vincent Kwan (Member of
Associate of Engineering).
The goal of this tour is to let students explore the
keys of IT development in Singapore. By visiting
two world-class universities and an international
IT firm, students were all able to spot the
technological development strengths of a city
proximate to Hong Kong and we believe this
would be very useful for them to find their
pathways to success in related fields in the
future.

for the Singapore Study Tour.
Apart from this, the tour also widened students'
horizon on latest computer technologies. Based on
our observation, students were all impressed by
the what they had seen and thought more positive
towards computing than before. Another point
that is worth to highlight is that the English and
Mandarin communication skills of our students
were greatly enhanced. Since they all treasured
the opportunity to interact with the people in
Singapore who speak English and Mandarin as
their mother tongue.

National University of Singapore (NUS)
National University of Singapore (NUS) is the oldest
university in Singapore. It is the largest university in
the country in terms of student enrollment and
curriculum offered. In 2012, NUS was ranked 25th
in the world and 2nd in Asia by the QS World
University Ranking.
On the 2nd day of our tour, we arranged a visit to
this prestigious university. It was our great honour
to invite Prof. Michael Brown, the Assistant Dean
(External Relations) of School of Computing, and
Associate Professor of Computer Science, to give us
a talk about undergraduate and postgraduate study
at NUS. We were happy to have some local
students from the department to share their
learning experience with our students, especially
during their summer break period.

Nanyang Technological University (NTU)
Nanyang Technology University is another public
university in Singapore with the biggest campus. It
was ranked 4th in the world among young elite
universities.
On the last day of our tour, Dr. Ivor Tsang from
NTU was invited to share with students about
undergraduate study at NTU. Dr. Tsang is come
from Hong Kong and he is currently serving as the
Deputy Director of the Centre for Computational
Intelligence, and the Assistant Professor of
Computer Engineering. With his strong academic
background in Computer Science, he was able to
share the keys to be successful in this field and
our students were all impressed by the project
demonstration given by Dr. Tsang, which showed
the beauty of computational methods.

International Business Machines Corporation (IBM), Singapore
International Business Machines Corporation,
known as IBM is an international IT firm. It
manufactures hardware and software, and
provides consulting services on mainframe
computers and nanotechnology.
On the 2nd day of our tour, Ms. Li Wen Jiang, the
IT Specialist Manager from the Division of Business
Transformation & Information Technology
conducted a talk to our students on the details of
various products provided by IBM. This talk was
important to our students in understanding the
required skill set and background for each area of
business in IBM if they are interested in joining this
world-class company in the future.
