Wichita High School Southeast
903 S. Edgemoor* Wichita, KS 67218*316.973.2700
A message from A. Leroy Parks...
Dear Parents, Students, Staff and community members,
At the time you are reading this e-newsletter, we will be on the horizon of completing our first
nine-weeks of school and it seems it has gone by in a blur of activities! The school climate is changing
at Southeast to support a culture of learning for all students and adults and re-designing our system
to meet the needs of our kids when they need it. It is believed every student should always be
learning. Students should be challenged and achieving to high standards both academically and behaviorally.
Parent-teacher conferences are an excellent opportunity for our teachers to connect with our
parents and discuss the progress your son or daughter is experiencing at this point in the school year.
I think it is imperative parents make every effort to attend conferences and engage with staff to build
a positive relationship of support and establish a connection to our school in order for us to provide
the best service possible! Parent-teacher conferences will occur on Wednesday October 17 from 4:00
p.m. until 7:15 p.m. and Thursday October 18 from 1:30-6:30 p.m. On Thursday, we will be releasing
students early at 12:30 p.m., so please plan accordingly. Students, when motivated, can make significant
improvements in their grades and their work habits during the second nine-weeks and semesters
end. If both parents and students know what needs to be accomplished and it is clearly articulated by
our staff, a student’s chances for success are greatly enhanced. I look forward to the conversations to
be had during conferences!
We held our first all school assembly in late August and I am extremely proud of the behavior
and enthusiasm our kids demonstrated towards one another and the participants of the assembly! It
was AWESOME!! Parents you are always welcome to attend also, and should you choose to do so,
please notify us in the office so we can properly meet your needs. Our next assembly is the first
Homecoming Assembly which also includes the Buff Olympics and is scheduled for October 10.
At Southeast High School FAILURE is not an option! The Academics First Policy has resumed
and our initial number of students on the list was 419. That’s a bit over 25% of our 1637 students.
It is important that our parents work diligently with the school to support your son or daughter
to seek the support systems we have established for our students who may struggle periodically. Students
are encouraged to use the help sessions during our 8th hour seminar time to complete missing
assignments for their teachers. Students also have access to college students who are hired to man our
School-wide Tutoring program, available to students during lunch, seminar and after-school. Students
can get assistance in all core subject areas and most elective areas also.
October 17 th Testing Day
There are several tests occurring on Wednesday, October 17, 2012.
Please be sure your students arrive to school on time and are alert for testing. The testing schedule will run as follows:
Freshman – ACT Explore
Sophomores* – ACT Plan
Juniors* – PSAT/NMSQT (must have registered by Oct. 5 th ) or ASVAB (must have registered by Sept. 28 th ) or practice
ACT Test
Seniors – ASVAB (must have registered by Sept. 28 th ) or practice ACT
*All AVID 10 th -11 th graders – PSAT/NMSQT
All test takers will need to be in their classrooms by 8:00 a.m. with their student ID, there will be NO LATE START. Any
students arriving late to national testing rooms (all tests except practice ACT) will not be allowed to enter and will be held
for the morning in Sweep & Keep.
This is an important date in your child’s education as many of these tests are pre-tests for the important ACT Test typically
taken at the Junior and Senior level. The more prepared for this test students are, the more scholarship and college admission
opportunities they may be eligible for. These tests also have a career planning aspect, which helps students gain better
What is the PSAT/NMSQT Test
The PSAT/NMSQT test stands for The Preliminary SAT/National Merit
Scholarship Qualifying Test. This test measures critical reading, math
problem-solving and writing skills developed over many years, both in
and out of school.
Why take the test
Receive feedback about critical academic skills.
Prepare for the SAT (required for some college admissions).
Prepare for college (identify AP potential).
Enter the NMSQT scholarship competition (awards range from $500-
$10,000 per year).
What is the test fee
USD 259 will be picking up the cost for those juniors wanting to take the
PSAT test for 2012.
Who should take the test
Although students are allowed to purchase and take the PSAT at any
time, students can only participate and be considered for a scholarship in
one specific competition year and the year in which the student takes the
PSAT to enter competition is very important.
Students who plan to spend the usual four years in high school
(grades 9-12) before entering college full time must take the qualifying
test in their 3 rd year of high school (grade 11, junior year).
Students who plan to leave high school early and enroll in college full
time, after spending three years or less in grades 9-12, usually
can participate in the National Merit Program if they take the PSAT
before they enroll in college. To enter the 2014 competition, these
students must be in either the next to last or the last year of high
school when they take the 2012 PSAT.
When and how do I register
Space is limited for the PSAT test. Testing space will be filled on a first
come, first served basis.
PSAT Preparation
Student Guide: When the student registers in B-2, they will receive an
Official Student Guide with test information and sample questions.
Test Prep Books: Many libraries and book stores have PSAT prep books
available with detailed strategies for improving scores.
Online: Go to www.collegeboard.com/psat for sample questions and
practice test answer explanations.
For more information, please contact the Southeast Student Service Center
or your child’s counselor.
What is the ASVAB Test
The free Armed Services Vocational Aptitude
Battery (ASVAB) is a career planning and
exploration program that combines a multiple
-aptitude test with an interest self-assessment
and a wide range of career exploration tools
and is administered by the United States Military
Entrance Processing Command. It is
used to determine qualification for enlistment
in the United States Armed Forces. It is also
used for career exploration for high school
and college students. The test is approximately
three hours and is composed of eight
subtests. Your ASVAB test results and “Find
Your Interests” are tools for you to explore
different occupations, identify a possible college
major, and find out about your personality.
Your AFQT military qualification score
is reflected on your test results as well and
can be used to enlist in any of the military
services.

Senior Timeline: How the CCC can help you
The CCC (College & Career Center) has moved to G1. If your student is college bound, please encourage
them to meet with Amy Alvarez, the Southeast College & Career Center Coordinator, as soon as
possible. Her primary role is to help your student plan for life after high school, but if their plans include
college, there are many upcoming deadlines they will want to meet to ensure their best opportunities
for admissions and scholarships.
Prior to Admission:
Do your homework. Research which colleges fit your educational plans, budget and lifestyle. This list should be narrowed to 3-5
colleges at the start of your senior year.
Take necessary College Admissions Tests. If you are not content with your ACT or SAT scores, the September and October test
dates are vital to receiving some of the high dollar scholarships out there. (Automatic admission ACT score for KS Board of
Regents Schools = 21) Do not let test scores delay your admission applications.
Visit your top schools. Interview current students, faculty and staff. Get a feel for the academic and social environment.
Make list of application, scholarship & housing deadlines.
Make a list of people who could provide you with a positive and accurate recommendation letter.
Before November 1 st Priority Scholarship Deadline:
Apply for admission to your top schools.
Request an official high school transcript be sent to your top schools through the registrar.
Apply for scholarships to your top schools. This may mean working in advance to obtain recommendation letters or help with
essays/activities charts.
Be sure your ACT scores are sent to the college – this is something ACT will do for you if you request it on your original test
registration, or they will charge you $10 per school choice.
Be sure to pay all fees associated with admissions applications or they will not be processed. Some schools have admission fee
waiver grants available for students who participate in certain programs (i.e. TRIO) or are on Free or Reduced Lunch.
December:
PARENTS: Save your year-end payroll stub if it shows your earnings for the year. You may need it for financial aid eligibility
reviews by schools.
January:
Complete and submit your FAFSA online at www.fafsa.gov as soon after January 1 st as possible.
Keep copies of all forms submitted for your own records.
PARENTS: Complete your income taxes early – schools may request them to prove eligibility for financial aid.
Attend the Southeast Financial Aid Night (Date & Time TBA) for more information on completing the FAFSA and description
of financial aid available.
February/March:
Submit any corrections to your FAFSA.
Once you have submitted your FAFSA, you should receive your Student Aid Report (SAR) notification via email within 5-7
days. This will indicate your Expected Family Contribution (EFC) which will be a good indication if you will be receiving Pell
Grant money from your college.
Contact each college financial aid office to make sure your application is complete and if they need any supporting documents to
complete your financial aid.
April/May:
Compare financial aid awards from each college you applied to.
Make your final decision and send in all enrollment and housing deposits before the final deadline.
File a FINAL TRANSCRIPT request card with the Southeast registrar.
Students or parents can contact our Tutor Coordinator Mallory Santee at 973-2753.
The Southeast faculty and staff are working in a collaborative process to increase the professional
dialogue and discussion to aid in increasing student achievement at SEHS. We commonly refer
to the process as Professional Learning Communities or PLC’s. PLC’s allow each department time to
meet and discuss more in depth a guaranteed and viable curriculum for the benefit of our students. This
process does have an impact on the daily schedule on Wednesday’s, so we have a late start to the normal
school day. On Wednesdays we will start classes at 8:20 a.m. Students that ride buses will experience
no change in their routes or schedules and will arrive as they do currently. Students are supervised
during PLC meetings in the building. Because students do arrive at a normal time and we start our
school day later on Wednesday’s, students are required to enter the building as they do on a regularly
scheduled start. Students are NOT ALLOWED to walk to the local area businesses, or visit Curtis Middle
School, particularly if they ride a bus to school. School administration and security will be monitoring
the parking lot and directing students to enter the building. Please encourage your student to not
walk to QuikTrip, Dillons or Walgreens to get snacks or beverages before school on late start days. We
have had some complaints from our local area businesses in reference to our students loitering in the
area. We will continue to monitor closely as we want to maintain a positive relationship with them and
our other area businesses; please encourage your student to stay on campus! I thank you in advance for
your support.
It is my belief parents send their very best to our school each and every day with the hopes their
student will be challenged academically. It is then our responsibility as educators to ensure it happened
to the best of our ability, on a daily basis. I have challenged myself and our staff with the task of building
Relational Capacity with our students and parents of Southeast, to better meet the needs of our students.
The mission of Wichita Southeast is to be a professional learning community that provides students
with the knowledge and skills to be productive in our society.
I am proud to be the principal of the school that launched me into my professional life and career
choice, many years ago. I look forward to working with all parents, students and staff to make this
year a positive experience for everyone. Please stay involved in the education of your child and involved
in the school.
