Steven Martineau – Named 2011 Citizen of the Year
When Steven Martineau took the podium, it
took him a couple of moments to put his words
together as he was taken by surprise being announced
as the 2011 Citizen of the Year. He
was very honored and mentioned that he felt to
be part of a group that had previously received
this award, is really, really special. Martineau
thanked his wife, family and his partners from
his law firm, Martineau, Hackett, Ramashko &
O’Neil, for allowing him time to spend on community
projects and what he is passionate about.
Leading up to the award, the 2010 Citizen of
the Year recipient, Kenneth Schaeffer, gave a
beautiful tribute to Steve’s volunteer work in the 2011 Citizen of the Year, Steve Martineau looking down at his

As part of its annual banquet, the Mt. Pleasant Area
Chamber of Commerce presented Eagle Awards to some
of the community’s most deserving volunteers. This
year’s recipients represent extraordinary service to their
Community Honors Outstanding Volunteers
organization and to our community.

community. Schaeffer stated, “This citizen has
demonstrated incredible foresight and enthusiasm
for improving the health and wellbeing of
those in our community.” Schaeffer concluded
his speech by stating that, “Steven Martineau is
connector, a motivator and a leader.” Not only
did he receive the award, but Ryan Tarrant from
Representative Dave Camp’s office presented
him with an American Flag that had been flown
over the nation’s capitol. The Mt. Pleasant
Area Chamber of Commerce offer’s its sincerest
congratulations to Mr. Steven Martineau, as
the 2011 Citizen of the Year.

Anthony Outstanding
Service Award established
by the Mt. Pleasant Area
Chamber of Commerce
Board of Directors recognizes
exemplary volunteer
service to the community,
the Chamber of Commerce
and the Chamber staff.
The award was created to
acknowledge one of the
Chamber’s most dedicated
volunteers, Charlie Anthony.
Each year this award is
given to a Chamber Board
member whose volunteerism
reflects the dedication
of Charles Anthony. The
recipient is selected by the
staff for distinguished service
in volunteering one’s
time, willingness to help,
and assistance to achieve
the Chamber’s goals.
We are proud to announce
that this year’s
recipient is Jim Holton,
Owner of Mountain Town
Station, Camille’s on the
River and the Mt. Pleasant
Brewing Company.
Jim has served as Secretary
and Treasurer of the
Chamber Board for two
years and on the Chamber
Board for several years prior
to this. Last year he was
instrumental in assisting
staff in developing and implementing
the new event;
Grand A’ffare. His tireless

work behind the scenes to
assure a food, wine and
beer tasting were available
to the patrons of this event
was invaluable by helping
staff navigate complicated
regulations, red tape and
paperwork with the State of
Michigan.
For the last three years
he has also provided over
200 box lunches for Le Tour
Road Marshal volunteers
during Saturday race day
either as a donation or for
very little cost. Jim has also
been extremely involved in
organizing the annual Volunteer
Appreciation Picnic
for the Chamber. While
Jim has served as a great
community leader on City
Commission, as Mayor and
on many boards of organizations,
he is renowned to
the Chamber staff for his
high spirited sense of humor
and frequent stopping in the
Chamber office to see if he
can assist in any way. Jim is
also a big supporter of Business
After Hours and many
other Chamber events.
Jim always has an easy
smile, a word of encouragement
for the staff, and
a joke to keep things light
frequently playing pranks
on the staff. Our deepest
congratulations and sincerest
appreciation goes to Jim
Holton for upholding the
time honored tradition of
Charles Anthony!

The Mt. Pleasant Area Chamber of Commerce is
pleased to host its first CEO Roundtable in Economic
Development. Economic Development generally refers
to the sustained, concerted actions of policymakers and
communities to promote the standard of living and economic
health of a specific area. Such actions can involve
multiple areas including development of human capital,
critical infrastructure, regional competitiveness, environmental
sustainability, health, safety, and other initiatives.
In its broadest sense, policies of economic development
encompass three major areas:
• Government: Meeting broad economic objectives
to include increased employment, and sustainable
growth.
• Programs that provide infrastructure and services
such as highways, parks, affordable housing, crime
prevention, and K–12 education.
• Job creation and retention through specific efforts
in business finance, marketing, neighborhood development,
small business development, business
retention and expansion, technology transfer, and
real estate development.
Please join us for a panel discussion with our local
experts in Isabella County who will be providing updates,
accomplishments and future trends in their respective
areas of Economic Development. Panelists will each
speak for approximately 15 minutes followed by an open
questions and answer session.

GUS GOES GREEN!
Gus Macker returns to the streets of
Mt. Pleasant and Central Michigan University
on April 28th-29th for the first
Michigan Macker of 2012! The 3-on-3
basketball tournament will take place in
and around historic Finch Fieldhouse in the
heart of Central Michigan University’s storied
campus with activities for all ages.
Gus Macker first took their 3-on-3
concept “on the road” with The Great Oil
Capital Shootout at CMU in 1986. Last
year’s event celebrated the 25th anniversary
of that event with an “old school”
theme. For the first time in Macker history,
the 2012 Mt. Pleasant/CMU tournament
will be reducing their carbon footprint with
every facet of the event including recycling
programs, using products with post-consumer
materials, paperless communication
efforts, reduced energy use and sustainability
crafts and education. So…come experience
3-on-3 basketball at its very best as
“GUS GOES GREEN!”
As a unique twist (and another first!) in
the Macker world – the Mt. Pleasant/CMU
tournament is completely run by college
students. Twenty-five students (enrolled in
RPL 400G – The Organization and Administration
of Basketball Festivals) serve as
the operational team taught by Dr. Tim Otteman
and Dr. Lori Irwin as part of CMU’s
Event Management minor. Other CMU
students involved in the event include
athletic training students on the medical
team, ROTC students handling
security and students in the Professional
Sales minor assisting with sponsorship
sales.

Macker benefits the Events Center at
