INDESTRUCTIBLE T4
Military laptops have to be exceptionally resisted for environment conditions and
damages. These standards are met by computer produced in Poland.
The era of portable personal computers did not started in 1991 when astronauts of
space-shuttle STS-43 Atlantis sent a message from Macintosh commercial laptop to NASA
center but symbolism of this event was obvious. Mobile computers have become accessible
for everybody. Although nasty people are joking the mentioned model was rather
transportable than portable, the company with an apple in logo proved, that portable laptops
accomplished the same parameters like desktop computers.
The soldiers in the whole world had looked at the laptops with a limited interest. Due
to vulnerability damage and sensitivity for environmental conditions the portable laptops had
not been utilized in entrenchment, tanks or combat vehicles but have been used on staff
officers desktops. At market emerged requisition for fail-safe laptops. Japanese company
Matsushita (since 2008 Panasonic Corporation) after some failures at the begin of production
decided to focus its activity on laptops.
The device of Panasonic Toughbook had not been equipped with impressive processor
and graphic card but was rugged for dust, filth, water and shocks. Although branch experts
had not been sure whether the computers would find clients who would pay three times bigger
price than ordinary laptop. The Panasonic Toughbook found thousands of clients. Generally it
had been bought by mine engineers, oil prospectors in Alaska and soldiers. It turned out proof
and shock-proof. The tests conducted by US Army in nineties shown conclusively, that
portable computers for soldiers must be resist for big temperature fluctuations from -30°C to
+60°C, insensitive for high dampness and strong shock-proof . Additional requirements are
related to electromagnetic resistance and protection against disclosing emission.
Requirements to be met by this class of device are described in military norms. In USA there
are collection of military standards of MIL-STD series. Poland has own environment
resistance standards for military equipment, they are the following: NO-06-A101 and
NO-06-A103. How much they are restrictive in relation to military laptops (they belong to the
group N.14) is confirmed by the fact that only few companies in the world e.g. German
corporation Roda meets Polish military standards.
THE ELITE SOCIETY
And recently, a Polish company joined the elite society of producers of military
rugged laptops. During the XIX International Defense Industry Exhibition in Kielce TELDAT
company presented Terminal T4 (Teldat Tactical Terminal Tablet), the first Polish computer
which meets all military standards that belong to N.14 group. As it is explained by Henryk
Kruszyński the TELDAT president, taking a challenge to build computer for BMS
JASMINE as an integral part of combat vehicle or portable device the engineers had to build
computer not only shock-proof and operating in climate and environment conditions
according to standards but also with dimensions like commercial laptop computer. The first
problem to be solved the was power supply or more exactly internal batteries. Contemporary
batteries provide the computers the power supply 6 hours in 25 C° temperature. In case of T4
the engineers had to achieve the same result at the severe frost. This was accomplished.
Thanks to it the T4 can be utilized in all climate conditions. "The developed by our company
laptop computer can operate in the temperature -30 C° to +60 C° and in the dampness 98%.
It means that T4 can work in the whole world in moderate, cold, dry, tropical and damp
climates”- said Mr Kruszyński. Additionally T4 is the Polish computer that not only meets
military standards for the N.14 group required by Polish Army but extends them. The norm
for the N.14 group requires for devices only to be watertight. It is important that the
requirement applies to devices which are switched off. T4 is waterproof and moreover is able
to work under water two hours at a depth of 1 m. In T4 there are implemented the two
following functions:
• accelerometer which enables to adjust the displayed image to the current position of
the device;
• magnetometr - compass.
T4 is equipped with transmission interfaces: WiFi, Bluetooth, GSM module, GPS,
video camera. Software implemented in terminal enables the transmission of data from
battlefield in a real time. Receivers of data get exact position of all friend forces. Objects in
the area are identified and mapped on the maps of the system, so that commanders have full
information on the subordinate forces. T4 begins the new line of computers that meet
requirements of N.14 Polish military standards.
