Aim<br />

Developing basic safety awareness, basic<br />

movement skills and water confidence<br />

skills. Children may use aids such as<br />

armbands, floats, woggles and shark fins.<br />

Developing safe entries, jumping in, basic<br />

floating, travel and rotation unaided to<br />

regain upright positions.<br />

Developing safe entries including<br />

submersion, travel up to 10 metres on the<br />

front and back, progress rotation skills<br />

and water safety knowledge.<br />

Developing the <strong>under</strong>standing of<br />

buoyancy through a range of skills,<br />

refining kicking technique for all strokes<br />

and swimming 10 metres to ASA<br />

standards.<br />

Developing “watermanship” through<br />

sculling, treading water skills and complete<br />

rotation, also performing all skills to<br />

ASA standards.<br />

Developing effective swimming skills<br />

including co-ordinated breathing,<br />

developing water safety and<br />

<strong>under</strong>standing for exercise.<br />

Developing quality stroke technique up to<br />

100 metres, incorporating skills learned<br />

and combining them to develop a linked<br />

routine and complete successfully an<br />

obstacle course that combines a variety<br />

or skills accomplished throughout<br />

stages 1 – 7.<br />

The National Teaching plan is designed to help a child to learn in an<br />

environment involving fun and games. Games are an ideal way for children to<br />

develop and combine one skill with another to support the process of building<br />

skills and techniques.<br />
