The Legendary
Masterpiece of Motor Racing History
As early as 1932, the international motor racing authority, AIACR, for safety reasons
decided to introduce the 750 kilogram formula (racing car weight without fuel, oil,
coolants and tyres). This was in an attempt to ban the ever larger and ever more powerful
and ever heavier cars from the racetracks. In compliance with the new racing requirements,
the two designers Nibel and Wagner built a new, supercharged-engine Mercedes-
Benz racing car; one which marked the beginning of the most successful racing epoch
yet in the history of Daimler-Benz. The car, well-known under its factory designation as
the W 25 - heralded the legend of the Silver Arrows and achieved a trimuphant reputation
in the history of automotive races.
1934: The legend of the Silver Arrows is
born - a winner
On the evening before the Eifel Race at the
Nürburgring the acceptance examination
took place for the cars attempting to enter
in the new 750 kg racing formula. To their
surprise, the Mercedes-Benz team's pride
and joy was one kilogram too heavy
despite its systematic lightweight design.
An overnight slimming regime was out of
the question. It was attributable to racing
manager Alfred Neubauer's courageous
decision that the legend of the Silver
Arrows was born on that day. Finally an
ingenious solution: Neubauer instructed
his mechanics to scrape off the white paint
coat from the aluminium bodywork. So, in
sweat-pouring work the paint was sanded
