President’s Message
Dear Friends:
It has been an exhilarating year at SUNY Delhi.
We recently dedicated the Exercise and Dance
Studio in our magnificent new Farrell Student
and Community Center. This fully-equipped
studio, a gift from Theresa Molloy ’80, is just one
of the special features in a facility that is truly
transforming students’ lives. From The Okun
Theatre, dedicated to Douglas Okun ’62, to the
Barnes and Noble Campus Store to the high
end offices for student clubs and organizations,
Farrell is a showcase facility that demonstrates
our commitment to providing students with
outstanding programs and services. It also is
the latest in a series of improvements that have
enlivened the Delhi campus. If you haven’t been
on campus recently, I encourage you to visit. You
will be very proud.
When you visit, you’ll also find that the college
remains committed to its core values. We have
an extraordinary team of faculty and staff whose
goal is to do everything possible to help students
succeed. Their creativity and dedication is
producing exceptional results that are earning the
college recognition at the local, state and national
levels. Recent accolades include:
• Ranking among the Best Regional Colleges in
the North, according to U.S. News and World
Report’s Guide to America’s Best Colleges, for
the fourth consecutive year;
• Earning the American Culinary Federation
National Hot Food Championship for the first
time in history;
• Qualifying for the President’s National Honor
Roll for Community Service for the fourth
year in a row;
• Being named a “Best College to Work For”
by The Chronicle of Higher Education, the
industry’s leading trade publication, for the
second straight year;
• Winning a SUNY Student Life Award for
Community Engagement; and
• Earning a VISTA grant to increase awareness
and promote the use of locally grown food.
SUNY Delhi is excelling in a very challenging
environment for public higher education. With
New York State experiencing multi-billion dollar
budget shortfalls, SUNY Delhi has seen its
operating budget cut by more than $5 million over
the past three years. State support now accounts
for less than 20 percent of our operating budget.
How have we been successful It’s been a team
effort. Everyone on campus has pitched in and
I am very grateful for their support. We have
been good fiscal managers, building strong cash
reserves. We have economized—saving over $1
million last year through energy conservation
alone. We have been extremely entrepreneurial,
generating new sources of revenue through online
and extension programs at sites throughout
New York State. Tuition and fee revenues also
increased significantly, so we are relying on our
affiliated organizations—CADI and the College
Foundation—for increased support. We saw
a slight increase in philanthropic gifts to the
Foundation last year from alumni and friends like
you, but need your support now more than ever.
Yes, we are definitely gazing into the future. This
Annual Report outlines the college’s intensive
planning efforts at all levels. New strategic
and campus facilities master plans will guide
programmatic growth and long-term development
of the campus. The Middle States reaccreditation
process offers the opportunity to assess everything
we do and will produce a roadmap for growth
and planning. The entire campus community is
also thoroughly engaged in the annual resource
allocation process that is directed by our Budget
and Planning Committee. As you read the Annual
Report, you’ll find that Delhi’s comprehensive
approach has the college strongly positioned
to continue its leadership role in public higher
education.
Sincerely,
2
