San Procolo volunteer association was also formed during that period, and still functions today, offering material and spiritual aid to A the needy. In the ensuing years, San Procolo became known as a centre for thought, prayer and discussions on poverty. Years later, the regular mass for the poor was transferred to the Badia Fiorentina and San Procolo was abandoned soon thereafter. After the flood of 1966, the church was permanently closed and eventually returned under management of the Salviati family. Though the collapse of the roof caused an incredible ruckus, no injuries were reported. However, officials are investigating whether the city is guilty of negligence and had risked public safety through a lack of inspection and enforcement of proper maintenance procedures. Some time ago, the Salviati family had requested permission to proceed with restoration projects, but this request was not approved. EYEWITNESS ACCOUNT: Canadian art historian Sabine Eiche was sleeping in her fl at a few metres away from the church when she was awakened by the crash of the roof of San Procolo: “At 2:30 a.m. the front half of the roof of San Procolo, at the corner of via Giraldi and via Pandolfi ni, collapsed with a horrifi c noise. I had been fast asleep and at fi rst I did not know what had happened. The noise was so great that I feared a campanile had come toppling to the ground. I went to my window and counted - from the left, the campanili of Palazzo Vecchio, the Bargello, the Badia, the Duomo, all were still standing. There was, however, a big cloud of dust to the right, obliterating my view of the Duomo. I saw people silhouetted against windows and climbing out onto the roofs. From my window I could not see down far enough into the street to discover what had happened. Soon beams of strong light began to probe the continued from pg., 1 darkness where I had noticed the cloud of dust a few minutes earlier. Voices drifted up to me, mixed with the sound of more stone and metal falling to the ground. It was now 3 a.m. Sleep was impossible. I went out to fi nd via Pandolfi ni and via Giraldi barricaded and pompieri hoisted on platforms, knocking down bits of loose roof and wall. There was a lot of rubble in the street, but it was clear that most of the roof beams, bricks, and tiles were now lying, shattered, all over the inside of the church.
