Group Performance Review 2010 3.2 People Management Conferences at Finlays In 2010, we focussed on rearticulating the company strategy to make sure that all Group employees are working towards the same goals. In order to drive awareness we held three management conferences in the UK, Kenya and Sri Lanka to talk about our strategy and 3-year business plan. Routes to Grow The ‘Routes to Grow’ programme is central to our training and development strategy. Its core objective is to create a continuous pipeline of talented managers with the experience and competencies to manage and lead our business, now and into the future. Building on strengths The purpose of ‘Routes to Grow’ is to ensure that, where possible, key roles and succession gaps can be covered by internal talent. We look at future management succession gaps, identify potential internal successors where they exist, and determine how long before they are ready to take on more senior positions. Nominated individuals undertake a rigorous and objective competency assessment process, externally facilitated. The process culminates in individual development plans to build on strengths, address weaknesses and provide clarity on possible career routes. There are currently some 100 people on the programme, from across the Finlays Group. Whilst training courses and coaching make a valuable contribution to an individual’s learning and development, one of the most effective ways to build experience is through assignments to other businesses or roles. ‘Routes to Grow’ provides a fair and objective structure to facilitate such moves. The benefits include: risk reduction in the business by establishing a ‘pipeline’ of future managers; retention of our management talent; reductions in knowledge loss and reductions in recruitment costs. For the individuals involved, the benefits include a broadening of horizons and the opportunity to experience a totally different Finlays business. ‘Routes to Grow’ has made a promising start over the last two years and will be increasingly implemented as one of our methodologies in ensuring we have a long term sustainable business. Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI) Supervisor Training The ETI Supervisor Training was rolled out across Finlays Kenyan operations in 2010, with the goal of training all 400 supervisors.
