Introduction 1.3 Scope of Report 8 Scope The report covers all the main reporting units in Finlays and records performance against two sets of objectives: i. Group Objectives - Those that apply to all our businesses ii. Business Unit Objectives - Selected by the Business Unit teams to reflect their main challenges. Introduction 1.3 Scope of Report In the first two reporting years we have been recording education in sustainability as we build awareness and understanding in the various businesses across the Group. Group Objectives • Carbon Undertake to be carbon restorative and minimise emissions of other greenhouse gases • Energy Continuously improve our resource management • Water Practise excellence in our management of water resources • Wa s te Continuously improve our resource management and reduce our waste generation We also report under the Group Objectives on Occupational Health & Safety and the financial impact of our business on the communities in which we operate. In the first two reporting years we have been recording education in sustainability as we drive awareness and understanding in the various businesses across the Group. This will be incorporated under the business training objectives in 2011 as part of developing the business skills of our employees. Business Unit Objectives Four key areas have been selected for specific reports in 2010: • Tea Estates Kenya ‘Catalysts for the Community’ • Horticulture Africa ‘Watershed Management’ • Horticulture Africa and Tea Estates Kenya ‘Supervisor training, dignity, and respect in the workplace’ • Fresh Produce and Horticulture Africa ‘Adopting a leadership role in supplier and smallholder development’ Methodology Measurement of metrics is based on Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) guidelines, and carbon is based on WRI/WBCSD GHG protocols. We have taken 2009 as the baseline against which we measure performance against medium term targets set for achievement by 2014. It should be noted that the entire Group will be reporting consistently by the end of 2011 and that any Business Unit for which data may not be available for 2009 will also form part of that report. New inclusions Reporting for the first time: • Tea Trading Mombasa Now reporting on all Group metrics for 2009 and 2010 • Taikoo Flowers & Young Plants Reporting in full for 2010 • Omniflora Current exclusions • The trading offices in Malawi, Indonesia and Dubai only report on Carbon and Occupational Health & Safety • James Finlay Pakistan To be included in the report from 2011 • Finlay Flowers BV Included in Carbon, and Occupational Health & Safety, for 2010; will be included in full from 2011 Finlays Sustainability Report 2010 9
