Floriade 2012 is the world stage for socially responsible production methods in horticulture and the showcase for sustainable and healthy horticultural produce. Floriade and the municipalities of the Regio Venlo have jointly formulated the Floriade Venlo Principles, which were inspired by the Cradle to Cradle (C2C) philosophy, with aim of creating a sustainable Floriade 2012. Floriade has a sustainable legacy: The landscaped park will be left behind after the event as a legacy housing GreenPark Venlo: an innovative, sustainably developed agrologistic business park where economy, ecology and knowledge transfer are intrinsically connected. Venlo Greenpark Floriade Venlo Principles: • We are native to our place • Our waste equals food • Sun is our income • Our air, soil and water are healthy • We design enjoyment for all generations • Our goal is a delightfully diverse, safe, healthy and just world with clean air, water, soil and power – economically and elegantly enjoyed. The municipalities of the Regio Venlo, represented by the mayors of the municipalities involved support and observe the principles and objectives of the “cradle to cradle” framework for the future development of the region. The Regio Venlo municipalities strive to translate the principles into practical applications in the following ways: • Energy generating or zero emission greenhouses or pavilions • Energy efficient equipment and installations • Power generation using solar-photovoltaic devices, solar thermal, cold/heat storage, wind and/or biomass • CO2 compensating measures for visitors • Waste prevention and sustainable waste processing • Sustainable transport • Limiting the amount of space used by parking spaces • Use of public transport and group transport • Use of sustainable fuels • Sustainable road building and road management in compliance with the higher ambitions contained in the Limburgs Pakket Duurzame Wegenbouw • Building material cradle to cradle • Carefully controlled water consumption, in balance with the ‘Klavertje4’ region, and healthy water quality • Healthy catering, sustainably produced food • Incorporation into the green surrounding environment • Stimulating biodiversity in the area of the site • Knowledge and awareness: visitors to Floriade must be conscious of the sustainable measures that have been applied • Social: Floriade event accessible for all levels of society Floriade expresses the Floriade Venlo Principles/sustainability by: • Making very possible effort to pay a contribution to the current issues and opportunities relating to society, the landscape and the economy in the regional development of the Venlo region. • Making every possible effort to create added value for the Venlo region for society (people), the landscape and nature (planet) and the economy (profit), and to the dynamic of people, planet and profit (performance). The emphasis is on the sum of these parts: people + planet + profit + performance. • Making the utmost efforts to enlist the support of the residents of the Regio Venlo, in the surroundings of Greenport and GreenPark and the international visitors to Floriade. • Making the utmost efforts to pay a contribution to creating a sustainable Regio Venlo, such as a CO2-neutral Floriade, sustainable transport, sustainable approach to the landscape, materials, food and biodiversity. • Making efforts, on the one hand, to ensure that the knowledge based innovation continues to develop after 2012 and, on the other hand, to foster awareness of this process among local residents and visitors. • Being the platform for sustainability and C2C during the event in 2012
