AUGUST

On May 31st Maribyrnong College held a Performing
Arts night in the college theatre. There were music
performances by Year 9 & 10 students and drama
performances by the Year 9 Drama class. I
participated in one of the drama performances with a
few of my mates. It was a fun and enjoyable night and
there was a fantastic crowd of people who turned up.
I would like to thank all of the parents for coming and
supporting us and also the teachers who organised
the event. Brock Renton-Anders 9B
WHOLESCHOOLASSEMBLY
Our first whole school student run assembly was a magnificent success. The theme of the assembly was to recognise the new leaders
in the school, celebrate the talents of our students in music and drama and listen to our guest speaker Mr. Shaun Micallef who had us
in stitches with his wit and humour. Our senior leaders were an inspiration to the junior students through their professionalism in
presenting the entire assembly. We also congratulate the school band on their fantastic performances, as well as 7E for getting up in
front of their peers to perform an African dance.
From the Fashion Parade to the acknowledgements of all the class captains, ambassadors, debaters and SRC, we say well done and
congratulations on the upbeat, happy atmosphere that was experienced in our assembly.
COLLEGECROSSCOUNTRY

The cross country was ran at Lake Edgewater where Years 7-9 competed
during their PE classes while Years 10-12 competed at lunch time. The
Years 7-9 race was fiercely contested with some close results. Even
though the Years 10-12 race was at lunch time, there was a massive turn
out in numbers for some very competitive races. The winners of their
respective year levels are on the table to the right. Having already
competed at the divisional level, team Maribyrnong have had numerous
students qualify for the WMR Finals. WELL DONE MARIBYRNONG.
On Friday 10 th June, some students from Maribyrnong College went to Footscray
to see the amazing and inspirational Dalai Lama. He is such an inspiring person to
listen to, as he sees everything in a positive way, and to be a better person. I
admire his dedication to helping the
world and the people in it, it is truly
amazing. We also learnt about true
friendship and opening up to people.
Friendship is the key to happiness in
life. The experience was life
changing and unforgettable. By
COLLEGEATHLETICSCARNIVAL
The Athletics Carnival was held at the Aberfeldie Athletics Track on June 2 nd . For the second day of winter we were certainly lucky to
have such a beautiful day for competitors to perform at their best with the bright sun shining all day. As at the swimming carnival, there
were plenty of colourful people around supporting their respective Houses.
Once all the buses
had arrived, the
events began with lots
of participants eager
to get involved in the
action. Years 7 & 8
was where all the
action was, with huge
numbers wanting to
get involved.
The day was greatly contested by all but there had to be a winner on the day - Well done
The College was very pleased with the
positive attitude and behaviour with which
our Senior School students approached
their unit examinations this semester. This
is the second year that Senior School
examinations have been held in the
Performing Arts Centre Hall. Year 10 and
11 students are learning to adapt to the
exam conditions that they will experience
in Year 12, including the stringent rules
that are enforced by the VCAA. The hall
can comfortably seat 200 students and
this year we had 151 students sit the GAT
(General Achievement Test) the largest
number of Unit 3/4 students at the College
for some years.
YEAR7–9SCIENCEFAIR–‘MAGNIFICENTCHEMISTRY’

On 18th May Maribyrnong College held its first Science Fair. The fair was open to
students in year 7 - 9 with the topic of "Magnificent Chemistry". Students were working
hard for 12 weeks on a variety of projects including posters, inventions, videos, computer
games, board games, models, photography and experiments. Students had to prepare
their project but also include a written piece to accompany it. Over 40 projects were
entered into the fair, but Elizabeth Birch of 8A won the "Overall best of show" with her
experimental research
project. Congratulations to
all involved, including
students, teachers and
parents for their support and
involvement. Many of the
projects will be entered into
the State Wide Science
Talent Search in August this year. By Miss Todorov
This year I participated in my very first Science Fair at Maribyrnong
College. It wasn't quite what I expected it to be. I actually enjoyed myself and found it quite amazing. All the projects were very
interesting and you could tell a lot of time and effort had gone into them - Alex Ritchie 7A
This year was the first time I had entered or been to a Science Fair and it was
one of the best experiences I have ever had. Louise and I entered a working
model on natural disasters. In the end, after lots of hard work, it turned out
really great and we won overall in Year 7 - Madelene Koeleman 7A & Louise
YEAR10ARTCLASS
These pieces are a small selection of artwork from the Year Ten Art Class. Students for these projects
were asked to use a range of media including 3D materials, paints, and pencils. Inspiration was taken
from an excursion to the Australian Center for the Moving Image as well as research in class where
students were introduced to a variety of different artists. Ms. Yvonne Beyer and her student teacher Mr.
Demian Shipley-Marshall conducted the class.
