135 meters below ground).”
4. Tour of the underground vaults – Rynek Underground
The Main Market Square
in Kraków is an unusual place.
Delineated in the middle of
the XIII century, it became the
principal public area of the city.
Unchanged through centuries,
today it is the heart of Kraków.
But in order to see how
it looked like in the late Middle
Ages, in the time when Mikolaj
Kopernik was walking about -
one needs to go underground.
Archeological works that
started in summer 2005, and
supposed to last for 6 months,
were extended after the scale and importance of the activity to be carried out was realized. In the end
excavation of the area under the eastern part of Main Market Square was completed after 5 years.
This should not be a big surprise considering the archeological layers of the Main Square contain
1000 years of history. The result of this research is presented in the underground exhibition, whose
main aim is to present very close connections between Middle Age Cracow and other Middle Age
European cities.
After closing ceremony on Thursday September 20, 2012.
Venue: Underground Museum
Address: Rynek Główny 1 (Main Market Square 1)
No transport is provided from the conference venue. The meeting is at 6:30 pm near Underground
Museum in Rynek Główny.
Kraków is renowned for its numerous old churches,
including the Gothic St. Mary’s Church famous
for its magnificent altar carved by Wit Stwosz. Probably
the most famous landmark in Kraków is the
Wawel Castle situated on Wawel Hill overlooking the
Vistula river. This Renaissance castle boasts a beautiful
arcaded courtyard, magnificent interiors and
famous Flemish tapestries. In addition to the Renaissance
castle, Kraków has a number of beautiful palaces
from the same period. These belonged to the rich
citizens of the city. One example is the Pod Baranami
Palace. After the partition of Poland (by the end of
the 18th century), Wawel became a necropolis for
national heroes (Prince Jozef Poniatowski, Tadeusz
Kosciuszko) and poets (Adam Mickiewicz, Juliusz Slowacki).
Later this role was taken over by the church
vault of the Paulite Fathers in Skalka. During this period
many museum collections were founded, such
as the art collection of the Czartoryski Family (with
Leonardo da Vinci’s „Lady with an Ermine”).
Kraków is also the city of Karol Wojtyla (Pope
John Paul II), composer Krzysztof Penderecki, and
many other famous people. Kraków is also one of the
greatest centres of science and the Kraków University
of Technology is one of its most renowned universities.
In 1978 Kraków was entered into the UNESCO
World Heritage Register.
