We would like to acknowledge the contribution of all Program Committee
Members and Reviewers. Our appreciation goes to Boguslaw Cyganek and Thomas
Nolte of the AGH University of Science & Technology, Poland, and Mälardalen
University, Sweden, respectively, for their dedication and excellent organization of
the scientific part of the conference.
The conference is preceded by the Industry Day, held on 17 September.
The Industry Day has a focus on wireless technologies in factory and industrial
automation: state of the arts and emerging trends. The Industry Day features
preeminent speakers from some of the leading industry vendors and research
establishments involved in shaping the wireless technologies and deploying them in
the factory and diverse industrial environments. ETFA 2012 attendees are invited to
this event at no extra cost.
The ETFA 2012 conference concludes with the Workshop Day featuring the 7th
International Workshop on Service Oriented Architectures in Converging Networked
Environments (SOCNE 2012), the 3rd 4DIAC User’s Workshop (4DIAC), and the
2nd Workshop on Industrial Automation Tool Integration for Engineering Project
Automation (iATPA 2012).
An event of this importance cannot be organized without the help of a large
number of volunteers. We would like to thank all of them for their valuable work.
We are especially indebted to the local organizing team. Our sincere gratitude goes
to the International Program Committee and the Chairs: Track Co-Chairs, Special
Session Co-Chairs, Work-In- Progress Co-Chairs, and the Reviewers. Also to the
Workshop Day and Industry Day Committees, Publication Chair, Keynote Speakers,
and all attendees who make this event possible.
ETFA 2012 offers a high quality technical program, interesting and important
satellite events, and an attractive social program. Please enjoy the conference and
your stay in Kraków.
The IEEE International Conference on Emerging Technologies and Factory
Automation (ETFA’12), held in Kraków, Poland, 17‐21 September 2011 is a
seventeenth in a series of very successful ETFA conferences. It is also an anniversary
issue since the first ETFA conference took place in Melbourne, Australia in 1992,
already then experiencing nice welcome from the scientific and industrial societies.
The primary goal of ETFA conferences is to join scientists, engineers and
practitioners from around the world and to present their best publications in
all aspects of emerging technologies and factory automation. During these two
decades we have witnessed an amazing technological progress and the series of
ETFA conferences has helped us to keep track with them as one of the prime events
in these fields.
Presentation of such broad subjects would not be possible without parallel tracks
organized by their Track Chairs. This year we also follow this tradition with seven
regular tracks covering relevant issues in Information Technology in Automation,
Industrial Communication Systems, Real‐Time and (Networked) Embedded Systems,
Automated Manufacturing Systems, Industrial Control, Computational Intelligence
and Modern Heuristics in Automation, as well as Intelligent Robots & Systems. In
this place we would like to express our gratitude to all the track Chairs and we would
like to thank Georg Frey, Marga Marcos, Gianluca Cena, Zdenek Hanzalek, Lucia
Lo Bello, Marco Di Natale, Cristian Mahulea, Carla Seatzu, Anton Cervin, Grzegorz
Granosik, Adam Słowik, Ireneusz Czarnowski, Antoni Grau and Dariusz Pazderski for
their excellent work.
In addition to the regular tracks ETFA’12 features ten Special Sessions proposed
by experts from various industry fields, covering selected topics like Distributed
17th IEEE International Conference on Emerging Technologies & Factory Automation
