<br />
<strong>Industrial</strong> <strong>Ethernet</strong> straight to the sensor<br />
Sensor systems, especially more complex measurement units like absolute rotary and linear encoders,<br />
not only use point-to-point connections like analog or synchronous serial interface (SSI). Integration<br />
into fieldbus surroundings is often used for applications where deterministic answering times are<br />
not urgently needed, e.g. visualization. Feedback for closed loop controllers was dominated by direct<br />
connections or specialized fieldbus systems.<br />
Now, <strong>Industrial</strong> <strong>Ethernet</strong> offers new possibilities that are capable of transporting data at an appropriate<br />
speed for closed loop control. Additional protocol changes are required that deterministic behavior,<br />
concerning transport time and synchronization, can be realized.<br />
For office PC’s, additional protocol means additional software, but since sensor systems usually do<br />
not have a big CPU on board, implementation of <strong>Industrial</strong> <strong>Ethernet</strong> requires special hardware.<br />
EtherCAT is specifically designed for I/O nodes and sensor systems with fast refresh of bus data. Small<br />
amounts of data sent by each device are transported in one protocol; therefore, the overhead load<br />
is very small respective to the effective data.<br />
In order to meet customers‘ needs, we have integrated EtherCAT standard into our current families<br />
of rotary and linear measurement systems.<br />

The main characteristics of EtherCAT is that the data of I/O nodes, encoder, drives, etc. are not sent in individual<br />
telegrams. All of the information is rather sent from one participant to the other, and each one takes out its<br />
destined information or data. Therefore, every participant can display its information at their destined location<br />
at the same time. Due to this, there are very short running times per node.<br />
The common use of this telegram is shown in a high rate of the user data. According to the group of<br />
standardizations there can be a rate of user data of 90%.<br />
The easiest case, EtherCAT communicates solely in its own subnet. The optimized EtherCAT protocol is<br />
transported directly in an <strong>Ethernet</strong> frame. The sequence of the data does not depend on the physical sequence<br />
of the nodes. It can be arbitrarily directed within the size of the 4MB process image. In doing so, you can realize<br />
all necessary industrial topologies like bus, star and line.<br />
To achieve real-time capability various clocks are distributed. Since the communication is logically built as a<br />
ring-structure and solely based on hardware, therefore the mother clock can determine the time offset of each<br />
segment and synchronize the distributed slave clocks.<br />
<strong>Ethernet</strong> Powerlink meets real-time demand by using enhanced time slicing or polling methods. A network with<br />
<strong>Ethernet</strong> Powerlink is compatible with other <strong>Ethernet</strong> applications. Powerlink is conform with e.g. CANopen<br />
Standard Device profiles according to EN50325-4.<br />
Depending on the network segment, Powerlink can respond to up to 240 nodes, it is hot plug capable and<br />
does enable direct communication between slaves.<br />
One of the nodes in the network is the managing node that according to the time slicing method assigns the<br />
bus rights. It assigns sending rights to the control nodes and calls up individual data over polling. After the<br />
communication synchronization phase, more asynchronous data can be exchanged.<br />
Similar to CANopen, process data objects can be accessed over individual parameter and data sets. The<br />
structure of each node is determined in the object directory.<br />
Within the network, <strong>Ethernet</strong> Powerlink does work with fixed IP addresses (Class C, 254 available addresses).<br />
Communication with other networks only take place over a router to secure the network traffic. It is possible<br />
to access each node over network address translation. The address is set individually in each node itself. Within<br />
a Powerlink network there are just Powerlink conform slaves allowed to guarantee a time synchronous data<br />
traffic.

ETC<br />
PROFINET combines the experience Profibus and <strong>Industrial</strong> <strong>Ethernet</strong> had for years in one technology. The<br />
concept is structured modular that the user can choose the cascadable functionality himself. It essentially<br />
differs in the way of the data exchange to satisfy the occasionally high speed requirements.<br />
PROFINET IO is developed for real time (RT) and for isochronous real time (IRT) with decentralized periphery.<br />
The specifications RT and IRT describe the real time features of the communication. PROFINET describes the<br />
entire data exchange between controller (master) and the devices (slaves), as well as the parameterization and<br />
diagnose.<br />
PROFINET IO is made for a fast data exchange between <strong>Ethernet</strong> based field devices and follows the provider/<br />
consumer model. An application relation (AR) will be build between a controller and a device. Over this AR<br />
communication relations (CR) will be determined with different features for parameter transfer, cyclical data<br />
exchange and alarm. The features of a device are in a general station description (GSD) file specified by the<br />
equipment manufacturer. The GSD file provides the basis of an energy system to plan the configuration of a<br />
PROFINET IO system.<br />
<br />
EtherNet/IP – Common <strong>Industrial</strong> Protocol (CIP) on EtherNet/IP offers users tools to use standardized <strong>Ethernet</strong><br />
technology for production applications with Internet and Enterprise-Connectivity. Hence, data is available<br />
at anytime and everywhere. Even DeviceNet uses CIP; therefore, there is a continuous secured automation<br />
structure. Also comparable to DeviceNet is the EtherNet/IP communication protocol which is transferred via<br />
UPD/IP and TCP/IP.<br />
A star topology is used in connection with standardized <strong>Ethernet</strong> infrastructure devices. The CIP offers a<br />
wide range of messages and services to capture the data of the production automation, among others there<br />
is information for controller, functional security, synchronization, motion and configuration. CIP is media<br />
independent and offers users consistent communication architecture throughout the whole production<br />
process. User can benefit from the numerous advantages of open networks, while at the same time automation<br />
investments in future system updates are protected.
Less installation costs, more flexibility<br />
Power over <strong>Ethernet</strong><br />

Power over <strong>Ethernet</strong> (PoE) is not an additional interface,<br />
but it is a new innovation of the EtherCAT interface. Due<br />
to one input / output cable, this new innovation is very<br />
cost efficient and during installation there will be no cable<br />
tangle.<br />
The power supply of the devices will be directly over the<br />
data line. Therefore, your network planning is more flexible<br />
and independent from plugs and switch cabinets. Your<br />
advantage is that the PoE-device can be installed where a<br />
number of cables would be annoying. Especially, where it<br />
is difficult to access, installation costs can be reduced.<br />
The worldwide standard IEEE 802.3af enables the common<br />
transfer of data and energy over one network. The use of a<br />
UPS (uninterrupted power supply) increases the reliability<br />
Power supply, directly over the data line!<br />
Your advantage:<br />
- Thanks to “Power over <strong>Ethernet</strong>” (PoE), you just connect the network line. The power<br />
cable is completely left out. Therefore, the network planning is independent from plugs<br />
and switch cabinets.<br />
- The speed of industrial <strong>Ethernet</strong> remains – the cable disappears.<br />
- Our rotary encoder with EtherCAT and PoE decreases your installation costs.
