Welcome to the <strong>2011</strong> <strong>International</strong> <strong>Conference</strong> on Diabetes and Metabolism.
It is our pleasure to invite the members and guests to the <strong>2011</strong> <strong>International</strong> <strong>Conference</strong>
on Diabetes and Metabolism which will be held in Grand Hilton Seoul Hotel, Seoul, Korea,
from 10 th to 12 th November <strong>2011</strong>.
Korean Diabetes Association (KDA) has arranged these important scientific symposia and
the extensive educational programs for physicians, researchers and educators. There will
be world-renowned speakers in Seventeen symposium sessions including Insulin
secretion & biology, Insulin action & obesity, Clinical diabetes & therapeutics,
Epidemiology & genetics, Acute & chronic complication and Behavioral medicine &
education. The pertinent issues in the broad areas of diabetes mellitus and its updated
treatment will be discussed throughout the conference.
This international conference is of significant importance for giving an opportunity for all
participants to update and exchange knowledge from basic to clinical and to develop a
common vision for the future of diabetes treatment through extensive discussions.

(University of Manchester, UK)
Prof. Andrew James Michael Boulton is currently a professor at University of
Manchester and University of Miami. His academic interest has been in the areas of
complications of diabetes, particularly the diabetic foot disease and diabetic
nephropathy. He has written over 400 articles and participated as a co-author of 8
relevant books. Professor Boulton was the editor of the "Diabetic Medicine" from 1991
to 1995. After serving as a president of the "Diabetic Foot Study Group" of EASD and the
"Foot Wound Interest Group" of ADA, he is now a vice-president of EASD. At this
symposium, Professor Boulton will give a presentation on recent research trends,
changes in treatment and prospects on diabetic foot disease with a title of “An update
on the diabetic foot for <strong>2011</strong>.”

Systemic impact of adipocyte-derived factors: impact on
hepatic physiology

Prof. Philipp Scherer is a director of Touchstone Diabetes Center, UT Southwestern
Medical center. As a worldwide leading scientist, Dr. Scherer has been working on the
integrated physiology of the adipocyte and the impact on whole body energy
homeostasis, inflammation and cancer. He is one of pioneers to identify adipocytederived
factors (adipokines) and adipocyte physiology. Especially, he has cloned
“adiponectin” and has elucidated the downstream signaling of adiponectin in the
regulation of carbohydrate and lipid metabolism. Recently, his research team has
demonstrated that adiponectin also plays a role in cancer cell growth and survival. In
this presentation, he will discuss the impact of adipokines on liver physiology.

Robert R. Henry
(University of Califormina, San Diego, USA)
Robert R. Henry is now a professor of Medicine and Division of Endocrinology &
Metabolism at University of California, San Diego.
And he is also currently a President of American Diabetes Association and Science and
is a member of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes, the Obesity Society,
the Endocrine Society, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and
Edinburgh, and the American Federation for Clinical Research.
He has written about 200 original articles and participated as a co-author of more than
100 invited articles and book chapters. His current clinical research interests involve
the study of new therapies for type 1 and type 2 diabetes and obesity. Basic science
interests include study of the metabolic and ca<strong>rd</strong>iovascular effects of human muscle
and adipose tissue secretory products, signal interactions between skeletal muscle
and adipose tissue and defects of insulin signal transduction in these tissues of obese
and type 2 diabetic patients.
At this symposium, Professor Henry will give a presentation on recent research trends,

Call for abstracts
The scientific program committee of ICDM <strong>2011</strong> welcomes the submission of abstracts from
worldwide experts in diabetes and metabolism. All abstracts will be reviewed by the scientific
program committee and assigned to the appropriate session (oral/poster) based on the
submitters' choices. *The scientific program committee reserves the right to accept or reject
submitted abstracts.
Abstract submission: 1 July ~ 15 September <strong>2011</strong>
Notification of acceptance: 21 September <strong>2011</strong>
Note: The submission of an abstract implies that the author fully agrees to publish it in the
abstract book and wants to present its research at the meeting. If a submission is officially
accepted by the scientific program committee, at least one author has to register to be included
in the conference program. Every presenting author is required to pre-register in o<strong>rd</strong>er that the
KDA secretariat can smoothly arrange the schedule for his/her presentation.
Please be advised that the abstract without the registration of the author by 30 September <strong>2011</strong>
will neither be published in the book nor be set in any session. *Contact and notify in advance the
secretariat in case you are planning to make an on-site registration.

Instructions for abstracts
1. All abstracts must be written in English through the website
(Faxed abstracts will not be accepted).
2. The length of the abstract is limited to 300 wo<strong>rd</strong>s. Not including titles, authors’ name
and affiliation.
3. The text should be arranged acco<strong>rd</strong>ing to the following structured format: Objective-
Methods-Results-Conclusion.
4. Authors may further edit and modify submitted abstracts until the submission
deadline. It is the responsibility of the authors to ensure that their text does not
contain typos or grammatical errors.
5. Authors have the option of choosing their presentation type (oral or poster
presentation). However, the scientific program committee will make the final decision.
Travel grant awa<strong>rd</strong>
This conference will awa<strong>rd</strong> travel grants to those who would like to participate in this
competition. The scientific program committee will select recipients for ‘Travel grant’ from
the outstanding submitted abstracts based on established criteria.
Selection criteria
1. You must be the first author on the abstract and/or the author who will deliver the
poster presentation.
2. You must be below 45 years of age at the time of the conference.
Select the "Apply for Travel Grant" when submitting the abstract online.
Each recipient will receive a grant of USD 500.
