he Athenaeum of Ohio, a landmark Cincinnati T institution, celebrated its 180th anniversary in 2009. One of the Athenaeum’s three divisions – Mount St. Mary’s Seminary of the West – ranks as the third oldest Catholic seminary in the United States and oldest west of the Appalachian Mountains. Mount St. Mary’s Seminarians, 1929 Commemoration of 100-year anniversary The institution was created by Bishop Edward D. Fenwick, the first bishop of Cincinnati, when he established St. Francis Xavier Seminary and the Athenaeum College in downtown Cincinnati on May 18, 1829. The city’s population then was about 30,000 and rapidly increasing. In 1851, the seminary was renamed Mount St. Mary’s of the West to avoid confusion with the original school name of St. Francis Xavier Seminary which grew to encompass a Cincinnati-based Jesuit college – Xavier University. With the separation of the seminary from the college, the name “Athenaeum” was dropped. Over the years, the major seminary, Mount St. Mary’s of the West, has had many homes and added a complementary minor seminary. In 1840, the seminary moved from downtown Cincinnati to St. Martin’s in Brown County, Ohio, and from there to Price Hill in 1851. In 1890, the preparatory seminary for high school graduates and collegians was created in Mount Washington, then called Cedar Point, and named St. Gregory Seminary. Shortly thereafter, the seminary on Price Hill was sold and the major seminarians joined the younger men at Cedar Point. In 1923, under the administration of Archbishop Henry K. Moeller, the major seminary again moved – this time to a newly constructed building in Norwood. The Athenaeum name was revived in 1928 by Cincinnati Archbishop Timothy McNicholas, who joined the two seminaries with a newly formed teachers’ college and a graduate school of scientific research. All four incorporated under Ohio law as a single degree-granting institution – The Athenaeum of Ohio. A new building was constructed in 1929 to house St. Gregory’s Seminary. This association with the teachers’ college, where hundreds of religious women were educated, and science institute continued into the early 1950s. In 1980, the minor seminary, St. Gregory’s, closed as enrollment dropped and Mount St. Mary’s moved from Norwood into the minor seminary’s building where it remains today. Today, the Athenaeum has more than 3,000 living alumni. In its history, 57 bishops have been educated, trained and ordained priests from the Athenaeum’s Mount St. Mary’s Seminary of the West.
