Dear Friends of The Athenaeum of Ohio,
The spirit of The Athenaeum of Ohio/Mount St.
Mary’s Seminary lives in every parish within the
19-county Archdiocese of Cincinnati, in every state,
and around the globe. From bishops to parish priests to
lay directors of religious education, from counselors to
educators to parish program directors, from deacons to
religion teachers, Athenaeum graduates serve the
Church and God’s people throughout the
archdiocese and far beyond.
The Athenaeum of Ohio is one of only a few preeminent Catholic graduate
schools of theology in the Midwest dedicated to preparing men and women who
wish to devote their time and talents to doing God’s work.
There is no institution more important to the future of the Catholic Church
in southwest Ohio. Without it, there is no place to train and educate future priests,
deacons and lay ministers – a tradition that began in 1829 and continues to
this day.
In a unique way, the people of God study together. The Athenaeum prepares
ordained and lay ministry in a single school, with a single faculty. Candidates for
both areas of ministry receive the same quality education and learn side by side
as they will later work side by side.
While the home of The Athenaeum of Ohio is a Cincinnati landmark – an
elegant granite building of Romanesque design on Beechmont Avenue – it is
far more than brick and mortar. It is one of the country’s oldest and most respected
Catholic theological centers. It is a living reminder of faith to all. It is the place
where Catholicism is nurtured, advanced and shared.
The mission of the Athenaeum is to prepare the seminarians for priesthood,
to encourage and strengthen brother priests through ongoing education and
formation, and to help Permanent Deacons and lay leaders in the Church fulfill
their God-given call in life.
We do all of this in collaboration with many dioceses and religious communities
and in dialogue with leaders of other denominations and faiths – all for the greater
honor and glory of God.
I hope that you will prayerfully consider joining me in this great endeavor
and I ask for your continued prayers.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
T institution, celebrated its 180th anniversary in
2009. One of the Athenaeum’s three divisions –
Mount St. Mary’s Seminary of the West – ranks as
the third oldest Catholic seminary in the United
States and oldest west of the Appalachian Mountains.
Mount St. Mary’s Seminarians, 1929
Commemoration of 100-year anniversary
The institution was created by Bishop Edward D. Fenwick,
the first bishop of Cincinnati, when he established St. Francis Xavier Seminary and the Athenaeum
College in downtown Cincinnati on May 18, 1829. The city’s population then was about 30,000 and
rapidly increasing.
In 1851, the seminary was renamed Mount St. Mary’s of the West to avoid confusion with the
original school name of St. Francis Xavier Seminary which grew to encompass a Cincinnati-based Jesuit
college – Xavier University.
With the separation of the seminary from the college, the name “Athenaeum” was dropped.
Over the years, the major seminary, Mount St. Mary’s of the West, has had many homes and added a
complementary minor seminary.
In 1840, the seminary moved from downtown Cincinnati to St. Martin’s in Brown County, Ohio,
and from there to Price Hill in 1851. In 1890, the preparatory seminary for high school graduates
and collegians was created in Mount Washington, then called Cedar Point, and named St. Gregory
Seminary. Shortly thereafter, the seminary on Price Hill was sold and the major seminarians joined the
younger men at Cedar Point.
In 1923, under the administration of Archbishop Henry K. Moeller, the major seminary again
moved – this time to a newly constructed building in Norwood.
The Athenaeum name was revived in 1928 by Cincinnati Archbishop Timothy McNicholas,
who joined the two seminaries with a newly formed teachers’ college and a graduate school of scientific
research. All four incorporated under Ohio law as a single degree-granting institution – The
Athenaeum of Ohio. A new building was constructed in 1929 to house St. Gregory’s Seminary.
This association with the teachers’ college, where hundreds of religious women were educated, and
science institute continued into the early 1950s.
In 1980, the minor seminary, St. Gregory’s, closed as enrollment dropped and Mount St. Mary’s
moved from Norwood into the minor seminary’s building where it remains today.
Today, the Athenaeum has more than 3,000 living alumni. In its history, 57 bishops have been
educated, trained and ordained priests from the Athenaeum’s Mount St. Mary’s Seminary of the West.
Athenaeum graduates live and work in every state and around the globe.
Our Legacy: Preparing Leaders for the Church
At the dawn of the new millennium, The Athenaeum of Ohio/Mount St. Mary’s Seminary of the
West is celebrating a vibrant past as it prepares ministers to serve a changing church. Today, it is
the theological center of the archdiocese.
Students from the Archdiocese of Cincinnati and other dioceses without seminaries have found an
outstanding priest formation program at Mount St. Mary’s.
There are more than 150 men and women enrolled in the institution’s Lay Pastoral Ministry
Program (LPMP), created in 1975 as one of the country’s first lay ministry programs. It is designed to
prepare lay Catholics for the variety of ministries found in today’s Church.
Additionally, The Athenaeum of Ohio/Mount St. Mary’s Seminary includes the permanent deacon
formation program and a pastoral counseling program. Total enrollment exceeds 250, most in graduate
degree programs.
The Athenaeum of Ohio is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central
Association of Colleges and Schools and by the Association of Theological Schools in the United States
and Canada. It is authorized by the State of Ohio to grant the following degrees: Master of Divinity,
Ohio’s oldest Catholic seminary stands on the threshold of a new and exciting era with initiatives
such as distance learning, new course offerings and creative responses to the challenges of tomorrow.
“Much more than a beautifully
appointed building, the Athenaeum is
a place alive with seminarians, deacon
candidates and lay pastoral ministry
students who strive to be open to
the Spirit and God’s call. We are truly
blessed to have an institution of such
high quality to prepare the Church’s
ministers of today and the future. ”
“As Director of my parish RCIA
program, I need to understand my
faith and the teachings of the
Catholic Church in order to share the
information with our catechumens
and candidates. Since graduating
from the Athenaeum, I am more
confident to share my faith and trust
in God with others.”
– Carol Maingot, RCIA Director
St. James the Greater, White Oak
“When I arrived at Holy Angels
Parish in Sidney in 2008, I also began
to teach at nearby Lehman Catholic
High School. The knowledge I gained
at the seminary I now share with the
children, as well as the adults, through
their well-attended adult religious
formation program. From young to old,
people look to priests to guide them
in their faith lives.”
As The Athenaeum of Ohio/Mount St. Mary’s Seminary celebrates its 180th anniversary, we are
blessed with an opportunity to look back on our rich history and successes, and use this firm
foundation to build an exciting future.
The Athenaeum has been and remains a pillar of solid formation for priests, deacons and lay
ministers of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati and beyond. Within these walls, men and women are
trained to teach the Good News, carrying Christ’s message of hope and healing to people from all
walks of life. When I think of all who have been educated here, and the good they have done, I am
truly humbled.
As the theological and pastoral resource center for the Archdiocese, the Athenaeum has made an
enormous impact on the life of this local community for nearly two centuries. Now, as we prepare
for the future in this Third Millennium, we are given the task of ensuring that the next generation of
priests, deacons and lay ecclesial ministers is given the best formation possible.
Part of this task involves the careful implementation of the Athenaeum’s Long Range Plan. This
embraces a wide range of issues including the increase in enrollment, the growth of awareness of the
Athenaeum in the community, the financial stability of the institution, the continued pursuit of
academic excellence and the prudent response to the needed repairs and improvements to maintain our
buildings and grounds.
In response to these needs of this school of formation, the Athenaeum has embarked on an
ambitious and exciting $15,750,000 fundraising effort. This campaign is designated to strengthen our
capital and programmatic resources and is aptly called Investing In Our Future...Preserving
Our Legacy.
As a committed member of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, or of one of the many communities
that have been enriched by the work of the Athenaeum over the years, I invite you to join in this historic
effort. With your support, now and in the future, we will be able to give our students the spiritual,
intellectual, pastoral and human formation that the Church asks us to provide. And in that way
we will be doing our best for those who have courageously answered the Lord’s call.
Thank you for your interest and your involvement in The Athenaeum of Ohio/Mount St. Mary’s
“The Athenaeum is the graduate
school of theology and a ministry
training center of the archdiocese.
In order to maintain our quality
programs, it is essential that we
retain and attract the most
knowledgeable and most effective
faculty. The generosity of our
benefactors is vital for this effort.”
– Dr. Terrance D. Callan, Ph.D.,
Dean of the Athenaeum
“Our fine teaching and pastoral staff
provide educational development for
people interested in ordained ministry,
lay pastoral ministry, or personal
spiritual enrichment. Our library staff
provide valuable assistance with
the marvelous theological holdings
housed here. We ask God’s continued
blessing on His work that we do, and
on those who participate with us.”
– Sr. Betty Jane Lillie, SC, Ph.D.
Investing in the Future of Our House of God
Building Improvements $7,125,000
From Beechmont Avenue, the pillars, terra cotta tiles and arched windows of the Athenaeum
welcome all. This elegant Cincinnati landmark, built in 1929 and completed in 1959, stands as
a living reminder of faith. The current and potential utilization of the building, combined with
the natural wear and tear of decades past, contribute to critical needs that must be addressed
immediately to ensure the Athenaeum of advancing its physical capabilities to accommodate
changing technologies.
M The seminary windows and roof, installed when the building was
originally constructed in the 1920’s, have served the Athenaeum well
over many years. Today however, corrosion, warping and rust have
taken a considerable toll. The Athenaeum’s 780 windows and roof
have reached a state where replacement is the only viable option.
Energy loss, lack effective climate control and poor aesthetic
appearance make replacement windows a top priority.
M Technological advancements – computer hardware, telephone systems and audiovisual
equipment – require continual upgrading to keep the Athenaeum technologically competitive.
Essential technology needs exist throughout campus, with the most pressing being “Smart Technology”
for classrooms. Improvements in technology will provide professors and students with opportunities
to teach and learn using multimedia. These upgrades will significantly enhance the learning
experience and make classrooms current. The practical technology will greatly improve teaching
facilities and ensure the Athenaeum’s ability to continue providing academic excellence.
M The Bartlett Pastoral Center provides an ideal place to reach out and welcome the growing
Catholic community of Cincinnati. It serves as a meeting space for RCIA, high school retreats,
workshops, lectures and events. It provides the only conference space on campus and current needs
have outgrown it. To accommodate growing needs, the facility requires further renovation and
technology upgrades.
Commit to the Future
The Athenaeum looks back on a strong legacy and
on the many gifts it has been given to steward.
Today, it is important to recognize that the school
must continue to grow to meet the changing
ministerial needs of society to prepare those who
are called to be the ministers of our Church. To
continue to meet the needs of our own Archdiocese
and beyond, we must embark on an ambitious
$15,750,000 fundraising effort to secure our
spiritual and academic legacy.
No institution in our Archdiocese enriches the
religious lives of the Catholic community in the same
way as The Athenaeum of Ohio. It is truly at the
forefront of nurturing and fostering the faith.
Aware of this great responsibility, the Archbishop of
Cincinnati, the Athenaeum Board of Trustees, and
the faculty and staff of the Athenaeum are planning
for the continuation of a great legacy: the formation
of priests, deacons and lay ministers.
But, it needs your help to accomplish this vision.
We invite everyone who seeks to secure the future
of our Church to join us in this critical campaign
effort by “Investing In Our Future and
Preserving Our Legacy.”
