The Weekly Pines
11 May 2007 – Newsletter No. 12
FROM THE PRINCIPAL
GP Visits – our thanks to the 14 local GPs
who visit schools annually on a voluntary basis
to talk with Year 11 students in an uninhibited
manner about matters relating to personal
development. The feedback they get is very
important and the advice they give our
students is invaluable. The program, organised
by the Manly Warringah Division of General
Practice Ltd, is an excellent example of the
quality of the relationship between the school
and the community. Thanks to Mr Rendell for
his organisation of the day.
Assessments – the SNAP test for Maths was
conducted very successfully this week as was
the Science Competition. It is a pleasure to
overhear students discussing what their
respective responses were as they walked
down the corridor after the tests!
Athletics Carnival – congratulations to
Hunter, the winning house from last week’s
carnival and congratulations to the age
champions listed later in this bulletin. The
students who were the helpers during the day
will be rewarded for their giving to the
community.
Principal for a Day – Mr Mark Ella, past
captain of the Australian Rugby Union team
and Senior partner in Horton Ella Marketing,
will be the Principal for a Day on Wednesday
16 th May. Mark is an exemplary role model for
students who has been awarded the Member
of the Order of Australia Medal in 1983, and
was Young Australian of the Year in 1982. He
has been inducted in the Australian Sports Hall
of Fame and the International Rugby Hall of
Fame. Mark is a passionate advocate for
social justice and self determination of
Aboriginal Australians.
During his visit he will be addressing the
school on assembly, speaking with some
groups of students in relation to sports training
and psychology, meeting staff and parents
who have booked in for the monthly school
tour! He is very pleased to give of his time for
the school and I am confident that our students
will be rewarded by this experience.
School Musical “The Fiddler on the Roof” –
preparations are well underway for a huge
spectacle this year. Students, teachers and
parents have already begun rehearsing,
making costumes and sets on Sundays as well
as other times. The level of involvement
reflects the school spirit, including past
students who have come back to help in
direction, music and set making.
Please make sure you make a note in your
diaries for one of three evening performances
or two matinees from Wednesday 13 th June
2007. Booking details through the front office
will follow later.
Tax Deductible Building and Public Library
Funds – the school established these ATO
approved funds in 2006 to provide an
opportunity for parents to donate money to
support resourcing for the library and learning
centre as well as building maintenance and
future capital works. Last term I presented to
the community some of the potential and
scope for technology in education as well as
progress made in building work and a vision
for the future. The response from parents was
very supportive, with a number of parents
offering their assistance to further refine a
blueprint for the future.
The funds mentioned above are vital to see
this vision being realised. They are
administered by committees including parent
representatives and are steadily growing. I
would encourage parents to consider financial
support through these before the end of the
financial year to help improve the learning
environment of current and future generations
of students. Donations can be organised
through the front office with appropriate
receipting for the ATO issued before the end of
June.
Amnesty Group – I am very pleased to see
that a group of students in the school is
starting an Amnesty International support
group which will establish links with this
wonderful organisation but also help develop
their awareness of the wider world and issues
of social and political justice. We hope to hear
more of their activities later.
Year Assemblies – next week there will be a
series of meetings with all years to celebrate
successes, share ideas and contribute to
school life. These assemblies are conducted
by the SRC representatives and provide
excellent opportunities for formal recognition of
student achievement. Year 12 will follow up
their meeting this week with session in stress
management.
Warning notice – parents are advised that
reports have been given to the school of a
male in a white van exhibiting anti social
behaviour in the local area. Students have
been advised to be aware and report any
incidences that may occur.
Bundanon Art Camp – we wish students
attending the art camp to Bundanon on the
Shoalhaven River a very productive
experience and look forward to seeing the
results of their workshops.
Congratulations to:
- Year 10 music students who performed
many items at their music night this
week. To see the curriculum
demonstrated as performance helps
ensure relevance and interest. Thanks
to Mr Boyd for his coordination of the
night.
David Tomlin
YEAR 10 MUSIC EVENING
Congratulations to all Year 10 Music students
on the wonderful variety of music presented at
your first concert of the year. This very
talented group played mainly classical and
baroque pieces, so the audience was treated
to the musical beauty of such composers as
Bach, mixed with the occasional more modern
composition.
From violin, to timpani, to saxophone and flute
Year 10 students demonstrated their skills on
many different instruments to the delight of a
most appreciative audience.
Many thanks to Mr Malcolm Boyd, Year 10
Music teacher, for co-ordinating this event but
most special thanks to the following
performers:
Eliza Goetze (Flute); Nathan Cosford
(Clarinet); Phillip Day (Clarinet); Laura Muir
(Clarinet); Hamish Clarke (Trumpet); Dylan
SPORT NEWS
The school athletics carnival held on 4 th was a
resounding success. Congratulations to
students and staff for a pleasant day if not hot
day.
The final point score was very close with
Phillip and Hunter neck and neck for most of
the day. Throughout most of the day Phillip
was ever so slightly ahead. The final point
score has Hunter receiving first place with a
score of 691. Phillip was a very close second
with a ten point difference, on 681. Macquarie
was in third place with 598 points, followed
closely by Bligh on 574. All houses are to be
congratulated on their team spirit and once
again on their ‘dress’ sense. There was an
‘improvement’ in taste with regard to attire as
displayed by the students.
