DRC Advisory Committee Meeting Thursday November 5, 2009 3:30-5:00 p.m. Present: Bob Albrecht, Cristi Ellingford, Susan Middleton, Beth Marinelli-Laster, Robera Mason, Paula Lambdin, Suzanne Joy, Karen San I. Welcome and Introductions II. Susan Middleton, VP Academic Affairs and Student Services LTCC Update Budget Impact – severe budget crisis Record enrollments More students than the college is paid to serve Core classes that must be offered Interim – key administrative positions (VP, VP Business, Dean Student Services) Challenges, budgetary constraints, morale Other service providers – in the same boat III. DRC Update • Student Counts 129 active DRC students 45% Learning Disabilities 18% Psychiatric Disabilities Other Disability Developmentally Delayed Mobility Acquired Brain Injury Blind/Visually Impaired Deaf/Hard of Hearing • Budget Our budget (from last year to this year) approx 42% cut Next year = a 50% cut (from last year’s budget) – an additional 8% cut Core services of DRC – how we can continue to provide these 33
How we can continue to grow the program and provide necessary services for our students while having dramatically (50% less) fewer resources and staff Impact – DRC is quiet without tutors Students in DRC working on computers, taking exams, LD assessment Bob, Cristi, Beth – answering phones, front desk, proctoring exams, contributing to LD assessments Fin Aid or Cal Works student – to help in DRC Something we will explore Coco at the One Stop – may know more about how we can get someone to help in the DRC – or Jennifer Healey Work experience/Internship – office admin/technology Explore Grants Grant Locator (Paula) More outreach to basic Math and English classes, LTCC orientations, STHS, etc. to continue to grow the DRC’s numbers Long-term – possibly DRC move in with Student Services or Tutoring Center • Community Resources Meeting Get community service providers together (S Lake Tahoe) social services, disability services Wait until budgets, etc. are settled – everyone is so overwhelmed right now IV.
