Moorooka ADS artist Greg Arnold with artwork inspired by the Cooktown Orchid.
Moorooka artists paint the town
Artists from Moorooka Adult
Day Service have brightened the
streets of Moorooka with original
artworks as part of Connecting
Brisbane’s Q150 Traffi c Signal Box
(TSB) project.
Connecting Brisbane is a
$2 million co-funded project
between Brisbane City Council
and the Queensland Government
celebrating the 150th anniversary
of Brisbane’s declaration as a
municipality and Queensland’s
separation from New South Wales.
Artists Greg Arnold, Tom
Hamilton, Michelle Ball and Elise
McKenzie from Moorooka Adult
Day Service all joined creative
forces to design and paint
TSB situated on the corner of
Beaudesert Road and Luxworth
Street at Moorooka as part of
Brisbane’s 150 years celebrations.
Susan Wedmaier, Manager of
CPL Moorooka Adult Day Service,
said the main theme of the signal
box designs was the Cooktown
Orchid, which is the fl oral emblem
of Queensland.
“Greg Arnold, one of the artists
involved, has a passionate interest
in gardening and fl owers, so we
decided to use that as a starting
point for our theme,” said Ms
Wedmaier.
“It was amazing collaborating
and coming up with a design, then
going through the whole process
of getting feedback and approval,
painting it and fi nally seeing it
fi nished outside on the TSB,” she
said.
This artwork along with all the
other Q150 TSBs will go in the
draw to win the Q150 TSB Award
at the annual TSB awards night
held in November. All the TSBs
Art for
Art’s Sake
Brisbane’s Waterfront Place
was alive with the ‘Colours of
Queensland’ when CPL hosted
its annual Art for Art’s Sake
(AFAS) gala charity auction on
Wednesday 27 May.
The ‘Colours of Queensland’
inspired art exhibition and
auction attracted over 160 people
and raised almost $55,000 for
Queenslanders with cerebral palsy
and other physical disabilities.
Brisbane’s ‘who’s who,’
including internationally acclaimed
local artists and art lovers alike,
snapped up iconic Queensland
artworks at the annual exhibition
and auction – with 28 pieces going
under the hammer.
“We are astounded and
delighted with the auction
results. Proceeds raised will go
towards improving the lives of
Queenslanders with a physical
disability,” said CEO, Angela
Tillmanns.
“These dollars will enable us
to continue to provide support
Organiser James Tod with participant
Georgia Cassar.
60 supporters took to the water
to enjoy a day of jetski riding
and sailing as part of the Honda
Jetskishop.com Lollipop Run, on
Sunday 17 May.
Launching from the Spit on the
Gold Coast jetski riders, along
with family and supporters on the
and much needed equipment and
services for children and families
with physical disabilities, such as
cerebral palsy.
“This includes services that will
enable young Queenslanders to
live an everyday life.
“On behalf of our thousands of
clients with a physical disability,
a big thank you to all those
involved in this event, including
our major sponsor Anthony DJ
Rigby Insurance and Investment
Services Pty Ltd and AMP
Foundation, the artists who
‘Good Ship Lollipop’, made their
way to the Bedrooms on South
Stradbroke for a hot breakfast and
water-based activities, including
speedboat-powered toboggan
rides.
This year’s rally raised $3,000
to support Child and Family
Support Services on the Gold
Coast.
The man behind the event
– Gold Coast local and Honda
Jetskishop.com owner James
Tod – is a passionate jetski rider
and created the annual jetski
fundraiser rally to support CPL.
“James has a heart of gold
and is a stalwart supporter of
fundraising
AFAS artist Peter Phillips in front of his masterpiece with Cascade Services Arts
Coordinator Louise Taylor and mother Yvonne Phillips.
donated their time and talent and
all our auction attendees and
bidders,” she said.
This year’s artworks were
inspired by iconic Queensland
scenes to mark Queensland’s
150th birthday and included
paintings by internationally
acclaimed Queensland artist
Kendall and other well-known
Queensland artists such as Emma
Sheldrake, David Hinchliffe and
Banx.
Jetskiing for Gold Coast kids
CPL through his annual jetski
rally fundraiser, as well as
through regular donations from
his business’ jetski sales and
services,” said CEO, Angela
Tillmanns.
“He also takes a very handson
approach to supporting local
Gold Coast children with a
physical disability and regularly
donates his time and equipment
to take them out for their very fi rst
jetski rides.
“We cannot thank James
enough for his support and for the
incredible experiences he provides
for these children and their
families,” she said.
