To mark the start of 2005, both the primary and secondary sections welcomed their new Co-Principals, and anticipated that they will add new dimensions to quality education at YCIS Hong Kong. Dr. Katherine Yau assumed the role of Chinese Co-Principal of the secondary section on January 3. Dr. Yau has replaced Dr. Troy Lui, who has been appointed as the Executive Secretary of the Culture Committee of the Yew Chung Education Foundation. Dr. Yau holds a Ph.D in Education from the United States. She brings with her a wealth of experience in education and has served as the Founding Director of the Administration of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts in 1983. Dr. Yau also contributes her time to community service as the Programme Director of the Moral Education Concern Group. “I feel that our students are active and intelligent and they have a wide variety of talents,” said Dr. Yau. “In a knowledge-based society, I would like to see our young people well-equipped with the ‘A, B, C skills’, that is Adaptability/Adjustment, Brain power (critical thinking) and Creativity,” she added. Meanwhile, Mrs. Julie Foster took on the role of Western Co-Principal of the primary section on January 24 while Mrs. Shirley Mead was promoted to the position of Superintendent of YCIS Hong Kong and Silicon Valley. Ambassador Maudeen A. Maskary, Consul-General of Saudi Arabia, gave a vivid description of various aspects of his country, including its government system, economy and religion. The presentation, held in the Hall of the Secondary Section on December 7, 2004, was well received by the students who found it very informative. YCIS Hong Kong Grandparents Attend Class Too !"# Caregivers are going to “school” alongside children thanks to Hong Kong’s Early Childhood Section which extended its effort in quality education to grandparents and domestic helpers. The two parent education evenings, held in October and January, 2005, were as popular, too. Positive feedback was received from participants at the grandparents’ workshop. They particularly liked the opportunity to share their ideas with each other on child management as well as ideas about working with children. Grandparents became very involved in the discussion about the independence of children. The high turn-out at the Helpers Workshop proved to be another success. Over 100 helpers attended the evening. They participated in various activities about child safety and child behaviour management. They also shared their thoughts in group discussions. To answer a common question from parents, “What does my child do at school”, two parent education evenings were organized. This was to help parents to get a better understanding of the curriculum. Led by teachers, participants conducted small group activities and discussions under different topics. On February 1, four YCIS Hong Kong girls (Year 10 Shanty Cheung, Year 9 Cherry Mok, Year 8 Katrina Lee and Year 7 Rosalyn Ng) set off to compete in the Hong Kong Inter-School Division III Athletics Championship - Kowloon and Hong Kong Area (Area 2). After the preliminary rounds of qualification and a semi-final, they had eventually edged out students from more than 30 other schools in order to reach the finals of the competition. Even the cold weather warning could not dampen the girls’ spirits, instead they were charged up with excitement in anticipation of finishing in a medal position. The girls’ effort and determination throughout the 3-day competition finally reaped reward when Shanty struck gold by producing a winning time of 13.90 seconds in the 100 m (B Grade) event. The team had a further cause for celebration when Katrina edged out her rivals to take a second gold medal in the 400 m (C Grade). Despite being in the youngest age group, Katrina’s winning time of 1:07.77 was the best in 400m run among all girls’ groups in the organizer’s record!
