The children had been well briefed for the trip byattending extra preparation classes which covered manyessential topics ranging from being away from home to surfawareness.It was wonderful to see thestudents interacting withAustralian school children inEnglish. It really made Englishpart of their lives and furtherenhanced their skills in thisimmersion environment. Theywere also able to take part inactivities that they would seldomget the chance to do at home. These included night beachwalks, body boarding, surfing, beach games, canoeing,sand castle competitions, problem solving and much more.In addition to the variety of activities offered, the childrenwere also able to enjoy the pristine environment and firstclass instruction.The children’s excellent behaviour was a feature of the trip.The coach driver who picked the students up from the airportwas most impressed. At the airport, he even asked otherpassengers exiting if they had seen a school group in thebaggage claim come through! An Iranian consul’s visit to <strong>YCIS</strong> <strong>Hong</strong> <strong>Kong</strong> campuses inApril has prompted cross-cultural exchanges between <strong>Yew</strong><strong>Chung</strong> and the Islamic country.Mr. Seyed Abbas Mousavi, the Consul of Cultural andCommercial Affairs of the Consulate General of IslamicRepublic of Iran in <strong>Hong</strong> <strong>Kong</strong>, was impressed with the multiculturaleducation in <strong>Yew</strong> <strong>Chung</strong> during his visit to thePrimary and Early Childhood sections in Kowloon Tong onApril 12. He will follow up the visit with lectures on Islamiccivilization, ancient Irancivilization and modernIranian culture.Leung Wai-keung of Year5 vividly illustrated anexcursion to the ancientChinese capital of Xian,including a visit to theterracotta warrior site.(Photo 1) Student leaders (Photo 1) from Year 6, Yeung Meilingand Jonathan Ip, surprised Mr. Mousavi with a lively trilingualdiscussion on their trip to Australia.Meanwhile, students of the Secondary section who wantedto know more about what American students were like foundthe answers at the assembly on April 29 as Mr. Nat Turner,Vice Consul of the US Consulate in <strong>Hong</strong> <strong>Kong</strong>, addressedthe Secondary section on the topic “People Your Age in theFive <strong>YCIS</strong> <strong>Hong</strong> <strong>Kong</strong> Secondary students made historyas they entered the third round of an internationalbusiness competition, which sees the reduction from theoriginal 1,016 teams to only 64 teams from around theworld.The <strong>Yew</strong> <strong>Chung</strong> team, comprising business managementand economics students James Jiang, Cheng Ka-wai, TomWan, Sam Chang and Andy Tang, performed brilliantly inthe Hewlett-Packard Global Business Challenge anddefeated many teams from outside <strong>Hong</strong> <strong>Kong</strong>. The thirdround will be completed in June, and the winning team willbe sent to Mexico for the final round in August. Three of <strong>YCIS</strong> <strong>Hong</strong> <strong>Kong</strong>’s Year 6 boys achieved anamazing feat for the Primary section’s Open Day in April -they wrote, illustrated, produced, and marketed their ownshort stories, and are now as famous to us as J.K. Rowling!Thomas Tsui, Jonathan Ip, and Frankie Leung, all of Year6B, wrote three short books in a series called The BlublandChronicles - The Tale of the Blubheads, The Land of theQooheads and The Final Battle. Each book has betweenfive and seven chapters, and each is illustrated with smalloriginal drawings by Frankie. The books have beentyped accurately, each covered with a differentcolour, and an acknowledgement of each author’sand the illustrator’s contribution is contained on theback cover.One copy of the set was purchased by the K11library, and the collection has now been cataloguedand entered onto our computer record. We areproud to include the work of our “in-house writers”in our collection. Well done boys!On April 9, <strong>YCIS</strong> <strong>Hong</strong> <strong>Kong</strong>’s Primary section threw openits doors and welcomed both children and parents alike totake part in its annual Open Day. Hundreds of people rolledin to soak up the carnival atmosphere. This year, manymembers of the public also attended and much interest wasshown in finding out about what type of education <strong>Yew</strong><strong>Chung</strong> offers students.The day’s activities were spread over the three campusesand the class productions, dance displays,musical performances, arts and crafts as wellas sporting activities all vied for the visitors’attention. The Parent Open Day Committee setup a refreshments tent, guaranteeingthemselves an extremely busy afternoon! As inprevious years, the afternoon was entirely nonprofit-makingand a staggering $45,000 wasraised for charity - far more than in previousyears. This money has been distributed to three worthycauses: the Heep <strong>Hong</strong> Society in <strong>Hong</strong> <strong>Kong</strong> (a charitywhich supports mentally and physically handicappedchildren); the White Temple School in Xian (a needymainland school which <strong>YCIS</strong> has links); and Year 12<strong>International</strong> Baccalaureate students from the Secondarysection who are undertaking a “goodwill mission” to helprefugees in northern Thailand.7<strong>YCIS</strong> <strong>Hong</strong> <strong>Kong</strong>Year 6 Authors as Famous as J.K.
