Participation at Harvard Model United Nations Conference a Great Experience
!"#$%&'()*+,-
A group of ten Model United Nations Club students from
YCIS Hong Kong’s Secondary section traveled to the United
States to attend the Harvard MUN Conference in December,
2004.
The crowd of over a thousand
delegates at the Opening
Ceremony intimidated us
somewhat. However, after the
first day of the conference, we
learned the ropes and everyone
became quite excited and
pleased because some of us had
spoken publicly in front of all the
delegates, and many others had gathered their
courage to approach other delegates to make allies.
Throughout the intense days of the conference, we
worked with many different people, drafting working
papers and solutions, making new friends from different
countries and polishing our communication as well as
presentation skills. Although most members of the
group served on different committees, and dealt with
different issues, we encouraged and supported each other
very well, and made an excellent team effort.
By the end of the conference, all of us had gained a great
deal of confidence in public speaking and had increased
our knowledge of current affairs and world issues. Although
the length and sheer intensity of the sessions had us
completely exhausted, we were very happy and felt that
every moment had been worth it.
Senior Students Perform Brilliantly in Schools Speech Festival
!"#$%&'()*+,
Four YCIS Hong Kong students have achieved brilliant
results in the 56th Annual Hong Kong Schools Speech
Festival (Chinese). They were awarded one champion, one
first runner-up and two second runners-up places in
improvised speech Senior Division (Secondary School).
Yancy Chu of Year 10, who became the champion of group
108, was praised by the judge for her intonation and good
eye contact. Jimmy Chow, Year 13, who gained the first
runner-up of group 6, successfully demonstrated the air of
an orator. His vocal inflection appropriately matched the
argument and the ambience. Joyce Tang and Samantha
Chan, both Year 12 students, were the second runners-up
of their own group.
In general, there were approximately 40 enrolments per
group; therefore, all of the award winners had to go through
4
cut-throat competition.
This year, a total of 39 YCIS Hong Kong students
participated in different categories of the Festival.
To mark the start of 2005, both the primary and secondary
sections welcomed their new Co-Principals, and anticipated
that they will add new dimensions to quality education at
YCIS Hong Kong.
Dr. Katherine Yau assumed the role of Chinese Co-Principal
of the secondary section on January 3. Dr. Yau has replaced
Dr. Troy Lui, who has been appointed as the Executive
Secretary of the Culture Committee of the Yew Chung
Education Foundation. Dr. Yau holds a Ph.D in Education
from the United States. She brings with her a wealth of
experience in education and has served as the Founding
Director of the Administration of the Hong Kong Academy
for Performing Arts in 1983. Dr. Yau also contributes her
time to community service as the Programme Director of
the Moral Education Concern Group.
“I feel that our students are active and intelligent and they
have a wide variety of talents,” said Dr. Yau. “In a
knowledge-based society, I would like to see our young
people well-equipped with the ‘A, B, C skills’, that is
Adaptability/Adjustment, Brain power (critical thinking) and
Creativity,” she added.
Meanwhile, Mrs. Julie Foster took on the role of Western
Co-Principal of the primary section on January 24 while Mrs.
Shirley Mead was promoted to the position of
Superintendent of YCIS Hong Kong and Silicon Valley.
Educated in Australia, Mrs. Foster comes to us with
extensive experience, having served as principal, deputy
principal, educational adviser as well as curriculum
development officer.
“My first impressions of Yew Chung are of happy and
motivated students, hard working and delightful staff and
the blending of the best of different cultures,” said Mrs.
New Appointments Bring New Dimensions to Quality Education
!"#$%&' ()
Years 7 to 9 students at YCIS Hong Kong attended a
multi-media presentation on Saudi Arabia by the country’s
envoy in Hong Kong.
Ambassador Maudeen A. Maskary, Consul-General of Saudi
Arabia, gave a vivid description of various aspects of his
country, including its government
system, economy and religion.
The presentation, held in the Hall of
the Secondary Section on December
7, 2004, was well received by the
students who found it very informative.
Foster. “To work with Chinese students who have the
opportunity for a bilingual education is fascinating and I am
continually amazed by the ability of students to constantly
change from one language to another as they move from
lesson to lesson.”
Grandparents Attend Class Too
!"#
Caregivers are going to “school” alongside children thanks
to Hong Kong’s Early Childhood Section which extended
its effort in quality education to grandparents and domestic
helpers. The two parent education evenings, held in October
and January, 2005, were as popular, too.
Positive feedback was received from participants at the
grandparents’ workshop. They particularly liked the
opportunity to share their ideas with each other on
child management as well as ideas about working
with children. Grandparents became very involved
in the discussion about the independence of children.
The high turn-out at the Helpers Workshop proved to
be another success. Over 100 helpers attended the
evening. They participated in various activities about
child safety and child behaviour management. They
also shared their thoughts in group discussions.
To answer a common question from parents, “What does
my child do at school”, two parent education evenings were
organized. This was to help parents to get a better
understanding of the curriculum. Led by teachers,
participants conducted small group activities and
discussions under different topics. Both evenings were
well-attended, reflecting the importance of their children’s
education to parents.
Cold But Gold != !
On February 1, four YCIS Hong Kong girls (Year 10
Shanty Cheung, Year 9 Cherry Mok, Year 8 Katrina Lee
and Year 7 Rosalyn Ng) set off to compete in the Hong
Kong Inter-School Division III Athletics Championship -
Kowloon and Hong Kong Area (Area 2). After the
preliminary rounds of qualification and a semi-final, they
had eventually edged out students from more than 30
other schools in order to reach the finals of the
competition. Even the cold weather warning could not
dampen the girls’ spirits, instead they were charged up
with excitement in anticipation of finishing in a medal
position. The girls’ effort and determination
throughout the 3-day competition finally
reaped reward when Shanty struck gold
by producing a winning time of 13.90
seconds in the 100 m (B Grade) event.
The team had a further cause for
celebration when Katrina edged out her
rivals to take a second gold medal in the
400 m (C Grade). Despite being in the
youngest age group, Katrina’s winning time of 1:07.77
was the best in 400m run among all girls’ groups in the
organizer’s record! Congratulations to our first Yew
Chung Athletics Team for their very fine and gutsy
performances!
YCIS Hong Kong
From ECE Children with Love
!"#$%&'(
The 5-year-old classes of the Early Childhood Section had
their best wishes sent to the children in Sri Lanka who were
injured by the tsunami in December. Ms. Tania de Saram,
a former teacher at Yew Chung, took many cards and soft
toys made and donated by the 5’s classes to distribute to
hospitalized children in Sri Lanka. Some of our students
even gave their favorite soft toy and teddy bears to help
the sick and injured children feel better.
During the Christmas Tree
Fund-Raising Campaign 2004
Children, the Early Childhood
Section students raised a total
of $9,550 for Hong Kong Blood
Cancer Foundation. In addition,
the children were allocated a
Christmas tree to display cards
that they had written their wishes on. The Christmas tree
was on display at Ocean Terminal from December 10, 2004
to January 5, 2005 alongside another one sponsored by
the Secondary Section.
The children also shared, gave and cared for other people
through contributing non-perishable food items to the
People’s Food Bank. They learnt that many children go to
school each day hungry. They were able to understand the
concept and brought different food
items to place into a donation box at
school. All of the donations were sent
to the People’s Food Bank which is an
organization set up to provide food to
people in need on a short-term or daily
basis.
The children’s Chinese New Year artworks
were displayed at the Kowloon Tong station in
February. It was also a wonderful opportunity
for the students to send their New Year wishes
to the community. It also followed the success
and warm response from the public on another
art exhibition by Yew Chung children during Christmas. The children’s
artworks showed a great variety of mediums as well as aspects of the
children’s art including painting, drawing and model-making.
“Sleepout” Teaches Students Not to Take Things for Granted
!"# ! !"#$%
On December 16-17, 2004, approximately 100 students from
Year 7 to Year 13 participated in the first ever “YCIS
Sleepout”. The activity was organised by the United Year
11 and it turned out to be a great success. Each sleepouter
was to spend the night in their warmest clothing, blankets,
cardboard boxes and reused materials to experience what
a night of homelessness is like. At the same time, they
raised funds to assist non-schooled children on Mainland
China.
The “Sleepout” officially began at 5:00 p.m. and boxes began
piling up on the basketball court. Some box shelters looked
like a mansion, some had no roofs and some looked like a
spaceship. It was really a rough night as
temperature dropped from 19 C to 12 C=.
At 10:30 p.m., our first all-girl band, Lily Ho, was
welcomed and gave a wonderful performance. The
United Year 11 security team took up the patrol
role through the night. Some of them did not sleep
at all and still resumed a normal school day.
Wake up call was at 6:00a.m. in that cold morning
and everyone began to
clean up. Once the
basketball courts were
cleared of cardboards,
helpers gave out bread and
school day resumed.
Rev. Yan Shu-yun of
Christian and Moral
Education Division (CMED)
believes that sleeping rough in the cold provides an
opportunity for the students to learn that we do not take
things for granted. It was also a precious experience for
the students’ personal growth.
they sang beautiful Christmas and pop songs. They were
to raise nearly $5,000 for the
Salvation Army.
Year 4 went to Ebenezer School
Society for the mentally challenged and gave
performances at these venues. Year 5 students
gave food and organised mini concerts for the
Creativity and Cooperation Make History Study Fun and Exciting
If boring and dull are the words which come to mind when
students at YCIS Hong Kong what they think of History
lessons. They not only made their History study fun and
exciting with their creativity and cooperation, but also made
their very own Roman Board Game.
The project, led by Mr. James Chapman and Mr. Edward
Hepting, was to round off the study of Ancient Rome in the
first term. Students were to combine their subject
knowledge, teamwork and creativity in a practical and fun
way. They were asked to put together the elements of
present-day board games such as “Monopoly” and
“Trivial Pursuit”. The students combined both class
work and homework time and then played each
other’s games at the end to test them out! A great
time was had by all.
Natalie Sheung and Yvonne Tong of Year 8D were
proud with their board game. They said, “When we
did the game together, we learned that many things
have to be done by helping each other and by
working hard.” Both enjoyed the project and are
looking forward to doing more of this kind in the future.
Factory Visit to Learn More about Food Industry
!"#$%&'
As part of the industrial visit project, 20 Year 12 students at
YCIS Hong Kong went on a visit to a factory in Tai Po on
January 23. IB Business Management students were given
valuable hands-on experience on the subject.
Our visit started with a six-minute video on Lee Kum Kee,
business trends, products and the numerous business
awards that the company has won over the years. Later
we toured their testing lab, production floor, kitchen and
packaging department. The final stop was at the quality
control unit where we gained useful knowledge on the
various elements that encompass the quality control process
in the food industry.
The visit culminated in a question-and-answer session.
Some logistics and marketing issues on the various sauces
being manufactured were also discussed.
Overall, the visit was quite inspiring as students were able
to gain a greater understanding of manufacturing processes
and of the food industry in general which was both interesting
and informative.
