During November, Ms. Anna Chan
(Vice-Principal of Primary) and Mrs.
Janene Grant (Lower Primary
Coordinator) from YCIS Hong Kong
visited Los Angeles to attend the
National Association for the
Education of Young Children
(NAEYC) annual conference for early
childhood educators. They talked
about the transition children
experience in Hong Kong as they move from the various
kindergarten programmes available to our international
primary school. The presentation was based on active
research, surveys and interviews conducted with parents,
teachers and students.
The audience was very interested in the rich language
environment which Yew Chung provides. Many questions
were raised on how to maintain and
help children in adjusting to the
complex language environment. Both
Ms. Chan and Mrs. Grant found the
opportunity to participate in this
significant event professionally
stimulating and very beneficial.
Primary Celebrates Christmas under the Theme “Care”
! !" !"=
Under the theme “We Care”, YCIS Hong Kong’s Primary
Section celebrated Christmas with creative and interesting
activities. Teachers and students were asked to think of
their own means of showing their concern for others in
practical ways.
The Year 1 children shared Christmas carols and stories
with the younger ones as they revisited the kindergarten.
The Year 2 children participated in a “Christmas Sing - a -
thon” on December 3 and raised
$29,687 for Operation Santa
Claus. The Year 3 classes took
turns to provide snacks for their
fellow classmates and were able
to raise nearly $5,000 for the
Salvation Army.
Year 4 went to Ebenezer School
for the Visually Impaired and the Heep Hong
Society for the mentally challenged and gave
performances at these venues. Year 5 students
gave food and organised mini concerts for the
elderly and mentally challenged at the St. James’
Settlement. Year 6 visited an elderly centre in
Shatin where they performed and gave gifts to the
residents.
The choir, recorder ensemble and strings ensemble
9
of our school also participated in the Christmas carol
performance at Festival Walk on December 15. It was
certainly a wonderful performance and added to the
Christmas spirit of the community.
