Programme Overview
The Master of Library and Information Science
(MLIS) Programme is designed to produce
graduates with a thorough knowledge of
theory and practice in library and information
science, as well as to equip them with the
requisite competencies that will enable them
to foster and thrive in a variety of information
environments.
Programme Structure
The MLIS programme is offered in two modes:
• Coursework and Dissertation mode (56 credits)
comprising four core courses (13 credits) and one
elective (3 credits) plus dissertation (40 credits).
• Dissertation mode based on 100% research
leading to the submission of a dissertation.
Programme Duration
The normal completion time is typically between three (3)
to six (6) semesters (1.5 to 3 years). The maximum time
allowed for completion is eight (8) semesters (4 years).
Admission Requirements
For admission into the Master of Library and
Information Science Programme, applicants must
have at least:
For Coursework and Dissertation mode
• a Bachelor’s degree with Honors in any discipline;
or
• a Bachelor’s degree and working experience
of at least three years in a library or information
centre; or
• a Diploma in Computer Science from the
University of Malaya or a postgraduate diploma
in a field related to Library Studies or Information
Science from another accredited institution; or
• other qualifications approved by the University
Senate.
For Dissertation Mode
• a Bachelor’s degree with Honours or a
comparable degree in the field of Library Studies
or Information Science; or
• a Bachelor’s degree in the field of Library Studies
or Information Science and have working
experience of at least three years in a library or
information centre; or
• a postgraduate diploma in the field of Library
Studies or Information Science or a comparable
qualification; or
• other qualifications approved by the University Senate.
International applicants are required to have:
• at least IELTS Band 6 or TOEFL score of 550
(paper based) / 213 (computer based) / 80 (Internet
based) if their first degree is from a university where
English is not the medium of instruction.
Preference will be given to applicants having a Bachelor’s
degree with CGPA of 3.0 or higher.

• Information needs & behaviour
• Information services / Information systems
• Bibliometrics / Scientometrics

• Information management / Knowledge management
• Libraries and information society
• Library and Organizational studies
Other areas of research may be considered depending on the expertise
available in the Faculty. Students are also welcomed to propose their
own topics.
