Asher: Son <strong>of</strong> Jacob and Zilpah, <strong>the</strong> slave <strong>of</strong> Leah. (Gn 30, 13). - Name <strong>of</strong> one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> twelve tribes <strong>of</strong> Israel. The tribe<br />

<strong>of</strong> Asher occupied <strong>the</strong> coast, north <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> mount Carmel. Anna, <strong>the</strong> prophetess <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> New Testament, was <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> tribe<br />

<strong>of</strong> Asher (Lk 2, 36).<br />

Asher Abba: The Ethiopian Synaxarium mentions on <strong>the</strong> 11th day <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> month Genbot 'On this day Abba Asher, <strong>the</strong><br />

teacher <strong>of</strong> Bali, was martyred as he was go<strong>in</strong>g to Jerusalem <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> Wanag Sagad (died 1540), <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>g. Asher<br />

worshipped before <strong>the</strong>y cut <strong>of</strong>f his head with <strong>the</strong> sword, and afterwards <strong>the</strong>y burnt him <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> fire, at <strong>the</strong> gates <strong>of</strong><br />

Jerusalem, at <strong>the</strong> place where <strong>the</strong> foot <strong>of</strong> our Lord stood'(place <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ascension).<br />

As<strong>in</strong>eth, wife <strong>of</strong> Joseph <strong>of</strong> Egypt. She is named among <strong>the</strong> 'just <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Old Testament' on <strong>the</strong> First Sunday <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Aspebet-Peter, bishop <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> camps (Paremboles). Round 420 Arab sheikhs, received <strong>the</strong> order to impede <strong>the</strong><br />

persecuted <strong>Christians</strong> <strong>of</strong> Persia to flee to <strong>the</strong> Roman Empire. Aspebet favoured <strong>the</strong> escape. He was betrayed and he fled<br />

to <strong>the</strong> Romans. The prefect <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Orient, Anatolus, appo<strong>in</strong>ted him as chief <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Saracen tribes <strong>of</strong> Arabia. Aspebet<br />

brought his sick son Terebon to Euthyme, <strong>the</strong> Great. This monk healed Terebon. Aspebet converted to Christianity and<br />

adopted <strong>the</strong> name Peter. Round 425, he was orda<strong>in</strong>ed 'bishop <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> camps' by Juvenal <strong>of</strong> Jerusalem. His bishopric<br />

'Paremboles, Camps (Castra Sarracenorum) extended between <strong>the</strong> monastery <strong>of</strong> St. Euthymius (Khan el-Ahmar or<br />

Khan es-Sahel) and <strong>the</strong> monastery <strong>of</strong> St. Theoctist (Deir el-Moukelik <strong>in</strong> wadi Dabor). Peter was present at <strong>the</strong> Council<br />

<strong>of</strong> Ephesus <strong>in</strong> 431. After his return he represented <strong>the</strong> Acts <strong>of</strong> Ephesus to Euthymius. The signature <strong>of</strong> Peter was:<br />

Petros, episcopos Paremboloon.<br />

Assisi. AA.SS. Oct 4 mention: Iter monachorum Hierosolymitanorum quatuor Assisium (<strong>in</strong> 353 four monks) - iter<br />

Then Jerome foresook his allegiance to Origen's teach<strong>in</strong>g, while Ruf<strong>in</strong>us rema<strong>in</strong>ed loyal to <strong>the</strong> doctr<strong>in</strong>e <strong>of</strong> Origen.<br />

Athanasia, St., wife <strong>of</strong> Andronicus, <strong>the</strong> goldsmith <strong>in</strong> Jerusalem. (Mart. Rom. Oct 9)<br />

Athanasia, martyr, Jan 31 and June 28. She was <strong>the</strong> mo<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> three daughters-martyrs: Theodota, Theoctista, Eudoxia.<br />

- In <strong>the</strong> Greek synaxaries her feast is on Jan 31. In <strong>the</strong> Palest<strong>in</strong>ian-Georgian calendar <strong>the</strong> 4 women, toge<strong>the</strong>r with <strong>the</strong><br />

martyrs Cyrus and his disciple John, are remembered on June 28 '<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> church <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Resurrection'.<br />

Athanasius <strong>of</strong> Alexandria (Athanasius, <strong>the</strong> Great), St., born at Alexandria, about 295, died Alexandria, May 2, 373.<br />

(Feast on May 2). He was bishop <strong>of</strong> Alexandria from 328 to 373. Emperor Constant<strong>in</strong>e (335) exiled him to Treves <strong>in</strong><br />

nor<strong>the</strong>rn Gaul. Athanasius promoted <strong>the</strong> monastic ideal <strong>in</strong> his travels through Italy and Gaul. He went to Sardica (<strong>in</strong><br />

Bulgaria), where a general council had been summoned by <strong>the</strong> Emperors Constans and Constantius II (343).<br />

Constantius II allowed Athanasius to return to his see <strong>in</strong> Alexandria, where he arrived <strong>in</strong> Oct 346. Dur<strong>in</strong>g this journey<br />

to Alexandria he visited Palest<strong>in</strong>e. - Three archbishops <strong>of</strong> Alexandria (Alexander, Athanasius, Cyrillus) are<br />

commemorated <strong>in</strong> Jerusalem on Jan 18, accord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> calendar <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Georgians.<br />

Athanasius, St. Deacon <strong>of</strong> Jerusalem and Martyr, July 4 <strong>in</strong> Mart. Rom. He was tormented by <strong>the</strong> heretics who followed<br />

Eutyches (born 375, condemned by Chalcedon, died 454). F<strong>in</strong>ally Athanasius was killed round 452 by <strong>the</strong> sword.<br />

Particular feast <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lat<strong>in</strong> Patriarchate. The AA.SS. has his feast on July 5.
