A warm welcome to Collegium Civitas. As a brainchild of the leading social
scientists from the Polish Academy of Sciences, Collegium Civitas is working
to create a unique academic environment. In the interest of individual instruction
within a framework of rigorous training, we maintain an exceptionally high faculty
to student ratio. While upholding high academic standards, we ensure
that our students feel comfortable in a friendly learning environment.
At Collegium Civitas, everyone knows everyone else, which enables
our administrative and academic staff to respond quickly and flexibly
to students’ needs.
We offer the highest quality education in the field of social sciences, drawing
the majority of our faculty from the Polish Academy of Sciences, Poland’s

Collegium Civitas was established under
the auspices of five Institutes of the Polish Academy
of Sciences and has extensively relied upon
the teaching and research traditions of these
renowned institutions. It is open to new trends
in higher education: interdisciplinary approaches,
closer lecturer-student relations, study abroad
programs, internships, and the encouragement
and supervision of individual student research
projects.
Collegium Civitas is accredited by the National
Accreditation Commission and the University
Accreditation Commission at the Conference
of Rectors of Academic Schools in Poland.
Collegium Civitas is formally entitled to grant
BA and MA degrees in International Relations,
Political Science and Sociology, and PhD degrees
in Sociology.
Our faculty members have been keen observers
of, and often active participants in, the dramatic
developments in Poland since 1989. Collegium
Civitas students study under the architects
of the country’s accession to the European Union
and have the opportunity to personally consult
eminent figures in this country’s recent history,
who encourage them to explore unorthodox
and original ideas. The faculty include distinguished
Professors such as Henryk Domański, Director
of the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology

of Political Studies at the Polish Academy
of Sciences; and Włodzimierz Wesołowski,
long-time President of the Polish
Sociological Association. Our expertise goes
beyond social and political theory.
Collegium Civitas also recruits lecturers
from among the major policy practitioners
involved in Poland’s transition
to democracy and a market based economy.
Its teachers have occupied important
positions at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs,
the Ministry of Finance and the National
Bank of Poland, and have contributed
to major think tanks, leading polling
organizations and the media. We are proud
that our faculty include Jacek Saryusz-
-Wolski, Vice-President of the European
Parliament; Jacek Żakowski, eminent
journalist and editor of Polityka magazine,
and Wiesław Johann, Constitutional Court
judge. Collegium Civitas has also attracted
a number of high-ranking international
scholars and academics, to teach a diverse
range of courses. Over the last few years,
we have enjoyed hosting scholars from
eminent institutions such as Harvard
University, New York University,
the University of Ottawa, the University
of Tubingen, CNRS Paris, the University
of Okayama and the Danish Institute
for International Studies.

a prerequisite to a successful career
in many professions and in academia.

For many social scientists, Central and Eastern
Europe epitomised the 20th Century. The region
has long been a testing ground for the best
and worst social and economic designs,
it was the main battlefield of the devastating
and cruel Second World War. At the close
of the war, with the formation of the Iron Curtain
dividing the continent, the communist regime
was brutally implemented in these lands.
The effects of this experiment, although
radically diminished, are still felt throughout
the region. 1989 brought about a peaceful
revolution, a new wave of radical change,
ushering in a period of transformation without
precedent. The amount of change undergone
by the people of this region over the course
of the past years is truly staggering. Since 1989,
they have witnessed the establishment of robust
democracies and vibrant market economies.
The region’s economic growth outperforms other
areas of the EU, reshaping its cities and landscapes.
Its capital cities are now among the most popular
destinations for tourists and business people alike.
Poland was at the centre of the dramatic events
of the 20th century, both horrifying and glorious.
In particular, as the instigator of the dismantling
of the communist regimes, Poland played
a distinguished role in facilitating the escape
of entire peoples from oppression. The Solidarity
movement famously fought for freedom and justice

and built the foundations for the re-creation
of civil society through non-violent means.
Today this proud country, a member
of the European Union, is once again taking
its rightful place in the heart of the
continent. Previously the territory
of command economy, scarcity and Plans,
it now attracts massive foreign investment,
multinational corporations and economic
migrants. Where once was greyness
and uniformity, now the streets bustle
with energy, new buildings rise, immigrants
from many cultures come. Warsaw, Poland’s
vibrant capital, is a city where old meets
new. It possesses the ambience of a young
capital, optimistically facing the future while
remaining mindful of its past. There
is a desire to explore frontiers, most
impressively demonstrated academically
in the fields of Humanities and Social
Sciences whereby practitioners of these
areas are often respected media

More than a quarter of a million students
study in the numerous universities
and colleges situated throughout the city.
In addition, the number of international
students, both from within the European
Union and without, has grown substantially
and continues to do so. Here they find

A relevant consideration may be that
the cost of living and tuition fees which
they encounter are substantially lower
than in Western Europe. Warsaw’s student

cultures, as well as a rapid turnover of bars

BA and MA Programs in English
These programs should be considered
by international students and foreign
nationals living in Poland as well as Poles
planning careers in international
organizations, research and business,
which require a good command of written
and spoken English. English has become
the international language of the social
sciences and is now invaluable
for a successful professional career
and for making scholarly contributions.
The studying of social and political sciences
requires a firm grasp of current literature,
most of which is available only in English.
No social scientist or international relations
analyst is able to succeed without the ability
to write clearly and engagingly in English.
We believe that the best strategy to meet
these challenges is to study in English,
rather than trying to master the English
language as an entirely separate endeavour.
Programs are offered exclusively in English
or in a combination of Polish and English
language classes. Intensive courses
of Polish as a foreign language are available
to international students.
Even more importantly, the ongoing
transition and democratization
in Central and Eastern Europe,
as well as the eastward expansion
of the European Union, are of key
significance to social and political
sciences and to the future
of the EU and its eastern neighbours.
Studying these processes in the heart
of the region and from the foremost
experts in the field is therefore a logical
choice. As a member of the European Credit
Transfer System, all credit points earned
at Collegium Civitas can be applied towards
a degree at other European universities
which have also adopted the ECTS.

The people have been so friendly in Collegium, helping
us with any queries – big or small, that we have
had. Nothing has been done as a duty but always
with good will and a smile. The students have been
wonderful and we have made many great friends here,
who we hope will visit us some time in Ireland!
All our professors have been more than willing

and answered any questions that we may have

Collegium Civitas is the first university in Poland that
included studies in English to the programs it offered.
Due to a relatively small number of students,
the contacts with instructors are better and more intense,
as are the contacts with the Collegium Civitas
authorities. What I treasure most in Collegium Civitas
are opportunities of participating in many valuable
and fascinating events and of making use of various
internships, which will render the start in my professional

In the third grade in high school I became a laureate
of the Olympiad on Poland and Contemporary World.
A year later I won the Collegium Civitas Student Book
competition and received a scholarship from this
university. Due to participation in the Olympiad
I was enrolled on Political Science at Warsaw University

International Relations at Collegium Civitas.

The International Relations Program
was Collegium’s first program to introduce its core
courses through the medium of the English
language. International Relations
is one of the fastest growing fields within the social
sciences due to public policy formation at national
level being dependent on international factors
to a degree higher than ever before. Furthermore,
business, political and non-governmental
organizations have to take into account
the increasingly international context in which
they function. The Program concentrates on three
areas: Diplomacy, the European Union,
and Strategic Studies.
The Program combines the theory of the basic
international relations disciplines with a pragmatic
focus. A considerable portion of the International
Relations Program is devoted to the development
of analytical skills and practical knowledge of
conducting debates and negotiations.
Students attain a sound knowledge of history
and of international relations theories, and this
knowledge, in combination with rigorous
practical training, allows students to apply
International Relations practices in various
professional settings, particularly, but not exclusively,
in government.

Among prominent visiting scholars

are Professors Haakan Wiberg of the Danish
Institute of International Studies, and David
Ewick of Chuo University in Tokyo.

Major Political Science disciplines such as electoral
behaviour, political economy, social welfare,
leadership studies, social change and comparative
government, all require an understanding of state
socialism and post-socialist transition.
For this reason we believe that international students
will welcome the opportunity to study Political
Science at Collegium Civitas as the optimal
way of understanding the complexities of convoluted
transitions to markets and democracy. The Program
also offers a variety of other courses covering
the most important aspects of this dynamic
and fast-growing field within social and political
studies. The Program’s main focus
is on comparative politics, leadership, globalization
and political communication.
The Program’s faculty has achieved recognition
for its research and teaching. Among those
who teach the program are distinguished
scholars such as Professors Hans-Dieter
Klingemann, Włodzimierz Wesołowski,
Edmund Wnuk-Lipiński, Hubert Izdebski,
Dariusz Stola, Paweł Machcewicz and Bohdan

The Sociology Program combines a thorough
grounding in social theory with rigorous training
in research methods and analytical skills. Students
also gain in-depth knowledge of contemporary
social processes and their social, economic
and political factors. This combination provides
students with skills which are applicable in multiple
domains and professions. Career opportunities
pursued by Collegium Sociology graduates include
roles within consultancy, the media, marketing,
non-governmental organizations, academe,
and other professions in which knowledge
of research methods, organizations and social
group dynamics is required.
The Sociology Program at Collegium Civitas
outperforms most programs of this type in Poland.
It has been placed first in both Wprost and Polityka
magazines’ ranking of Sociology departments
and has been awarded first place by the Polish
Sociological Association among similar programs
taught at Polish non-public universities.
The Conference of Polish University Presidents
has issued it a formal certificate of excellence
in education. It has also been formally entitled
to grant PhD degrees, in addition to BA and MA
degrees.

International Relations is one the fastest growing
fields within the social sciences due to public policy

on international factors to a degree higher
than ever before. Furthermore business,
political and non-governmental organizations
have to take into account the increasingly
international context in which they function. Indeed,
a high proportion of new laws and regulations
enacted in Poland over the past decade have focused
on the process of adapting Polish domestic policies
to European Union norms and to other international
requirements.
The International Relations Program at Collegium
Civitas prides itself on its innovativeness
and dynamism. The Program’s emphasis
is on training students to be able to conduct
a rigorous, time efficient analysis of events shaping
the modern, globalized world. The training provided
enables students to assume positions
in government, business, NGOs and within
academe. The program’s areas of strength
are international politics, strategic studies,
world economy and history, international law,
negotiation and multicultural studies. Student areas
of specialization include diplomacy, the European
Union, and strategic studies. Because the program
is genuinely interdisciplinary, students
are encouraged to take courses offered outside
the International Relations Program.

and policy makers to teach on the Program.
The Program Director is Professor
Wojciech Roszkowski, expert on 20th
Century international history and a Member
of the European Parliament. The Program
Faculty includes Professor Jacek Saryusz-
-Wolski, Vice-President of the European
Parliament, former Minister for European
Integration; Professor Jan Grabowski
and Ambassadors Robert Mroziewicz,
Maciej Koźmiński and Ryszard Żółtaniecki.
The program faculty also prides itself
on containing a group of young, dynamic
scholars who contribute to its creative
learning environment.
Students receive exposure to real life policy
issues through an internship program which
offers entry level positions in both the Polish
public and private sectors and within
Polish embassies and consulates abroad.

The Political Science Program focuses
on the rules and mechanisms governing political
processes and public life. It offers knowledge and
skills indispensable to future policy analysts,
public administrators, political consultants,
campaign managers, lobbyists, political journalists,
academics and other professionals.
The multidisciplinary nature of the Collegium
Civitas Political Science Program enables students
to master a broad range of such skills.
Students may choose from among the following
areas of specialization: Political Leadership, Political
Culture and Marketing. The Program also includes
humanities and arts courses such as rhetoric,
theatre and contemporary literature. Courses offered
by other programs may also be taken. Students
are encouraged to develop practical skills through
participation in internships at public institutions,
NGOs, political organizations or parties. Internships
at international sites are also available. The Program

Szklarski, for many years a lecturer in the US,

contradictions. The Cultural Anthropology
Program is the most recent addition
to the degree programs at Collegium Civitas.
Formally a specialization within Sociology,
it enjoys autonomous status.
The Program places emphasis
on the history of anthropology
and on ethnography. A considerable
amount of field work in eastern Poland
and in Lithuania is also involved.
In addition, students are encouraged
to take courses in philosophy – in ethics,
phenomenology and hermeneutics
in particular. The Program Director
is Professor Joanna Tokarska-Bakir,
Humboldt Fellow at Heidelberg
and Andrew W. Mellon Fellow
at the Instituts für die Wissenschaften
vom Menschen in Vienna.
The Program grants BA and MA degrees.

The Journalism Program combines formal
education in politics, law, sociology, economics,
psychology, philosophy and history with a variety
of workshops which enable students to handle
assignments from cross-media formats including
the print media, radio and television. Students
develop research, analytical and documentation
skills, learn to write and edit print media
and to create scripts for radio and television
programs.
The courses and workshops of the Journalism
Program are taught by a group of leading Polish
journalists. The Program Director is Jacek Żakowski,
host of news and information programs on the
TOK FM radio station, columnist with Polityka
magazine and broadcaster on major
TV channels. Other media personalities teaching
on the Program include Grzegorz Miecugow,
editor-in-chief of the TVN24 news channel and
Tomasz Wróblewski, editor-in-chief of Newsweek
Polska magazine.

The Political Philosophy Program
at Collegium Civitas is based on a system
of individual academic tuition which
enables students to study directly under
their chosen mentor throughout their
course of study.
The Program was developed in close
co-operation with the Institute
of Philosophy and Sociology at the Polish
Academy of Sciences. Its design follows
the assumption that philosophical reflection
will grow in importance as a means
of contributing to modern public life, hence
the program emphasis on political
philosophy. With this goal in mind, students
have the opportunity to participate
in workshops and to develop practical
interpersonal and discussion skills.

While emphasizing the “philosophy
as practice” approach, traditional philosophical
disciplines such as epistemology,
ontology, ethics, aesthetics and the history
of philosophy are also central aspects
of the Program.
The Program Director is Professor Tadeusz
Gadacz, one of the most accomplished
contemporary Polish philosophers.
He is the recipient of the President
of Warsaw Award for Best Academic Teacher
and is the editor of the Encyclopedia
of Religion and of the PWN Polish Science
Publishers Encyclopedia.

PhD Programs
Collegium Civitas offers a PhD Program
in Sociology. A Doctoral Program in Political
Science is offered jointly by Collegium Civitas
and the Institute of Political Studies at the Polish
Academy of Sciences. Doctoral Program courses
are taught by the faculties of Collegium Civitas
and the Institute of Political Studies. The Programs
feature individualized academic guidance
and are offered both in full-time and part-time
formats.
Jointly with the Institute of Slavic Languages
at the Polish Academy of Sciences, Collegium
Civitas offers a PhD program in Slavic Languages
and Literature. Graduates of MA programs in Slavic
Languages, Polish or other humanities subjects
are invited to apply. The Program also features
individualized academic guidance and is available
both in full-time and part-time formats.

Diplomacy
This two-semester program of weekend
studies is addressed to those working
in international environments
or considering a career in fields
which require knowledge of international
environments. The majority of students
studying this Program are Foreign Office
and public administration employees,
military personnel or legal professionals.
However, students from different
backgrounds have also found the Program
a rewarding experience. The Program
features international diplomatic
and consular law, diplomatic protocol,
office technologies, the theory and practice
of negotiation and English language
workshops. The Program Director
is Professor Maciej Koźmiński, former
Polish ambassador to Hungary.
European Union
This four-semester program provides
essential academic background
and practical skills to those seeking
to pursue careers within European Union
institutions. The Program includes
European Union-centred course work
in political science, sociology, diplomacy,
law, history, economics and two foreign
language workshops. The Program Director
is Professor Jacek Saryusz-Wolski,
Vice-President of the European
Parliament, Poland’s former Minister
for European Integration and former
president of the College of Europe
in Natolin.
Management and Administration
of Non-Governmental Organizations
This two-semester weekend program
is addressed to non-profit sector
professionals, public administrators
working with NGOs and those
considering careers in either of these
fields. The Program’s focus
is on an interdisciplinary background
along with the practical skills required
in the day-to-day management
of non-governmental and social service
organizations, such as program funding,
budgeting and personnel management.
The Program Director is Professor Ewa Leś,
Poland’s leading specialist on the third
sector.
Lobbying
This one-semester program focuses on developing
the skills required for those seeking to influence public
or private sector decision-making in a professional
manner. Program faculty includes Poland’s leading
professional lobbyists and academics specializing
in this area. The Program Director is Dr Małgorzata
Molęda-Zdziech.
Coaching Skills
This two-semester weekend program is initiated
and run by Collegium Civitas together with the renowned
Association of Coaches of Non-Governmental
Organisations. It is addressed to those who want to gain
knowledge and skills of a coach specializing in adult
education. The program is also highly useful to people
who are engaged in business coaching and in training
sessions for managers and public officials.
The participants of the program will learn, among other
things, how to make the coaching process as worthwhile
and productive as possible. They will find out how
to improve people professional and personal
performances through effective coaching. The program
Director is Dr Mariola Łaguna, the leading Polish
expert in coaching, possessing an International Certificate
in the field of coaching and professional development
granted by the Institute of Personal Development
in London.
An MA degree is required to enter any of these programs.

Research Opportunities
Collegium Civitas students participate in a range
of empirical research projects. They have
researched ethnic relations in Pomerania, social
problems in economically depressed regions
and worked as field research coordinators during
a survey of applicants for the Polish visa system
in Russia, Belarus and Ukraine. Other students
have recently completed a research project
on the changing public perception of the Palace
of Culture and Science, the home of Collegium
Civitas. Another team has conducted a study
of active forms of assistance aimed at reducing
unemployment in a Warsaw suburb.
Student Publications
Zeszyty Naukowe Collegium Civitas is a journal
devoted exclusively to presenting our students
academic work. Most of the articles published
in the journal are outstanding papers written
as a part of the contributor’s on-going course
work, although some are prepared specifically

papers also include those presenting the
results of the empirical projects in which
our students have participated.
Our students have founded and play
a major role in publishing the Stosunki
Międzynarodowe (International Relations)

the professional and technical skills
essential in journalism and related fields.
Interships
Our students have access to a wide range
of internships in the Polish public sector
and private firms, institutions
and
organizations. Internships
at international locations are also available.
Scholarships
Many Collegium Civitas students benefit
from scholarships and grants. The former
are given on the basis of academic
performance, while students from
low-income families may apply
for the latter. Such financial assistance
is available primarily to Polish nationals
and residents.
Office for Student Employment,
Career Counselling and Placement
Students from European Union countries
are entitled to work in Poland without
a work permit. Students from other
countries, however, need employment
authorization. Students from such countries
should contact us prior to their arrival
in Poland so that arrangements
can be made to ease their introduction
into life in Warsaw. Our school
has a Careers and Placement Office,
the aim of which is to assist graduates
in finding internships, temporary jobs
and permanent employment
opportunities which match their abilities
and career objectives. The office has a wide
range of contacts with employers
throughout the country.
Collegium has an extensive network of international partners.
We have concluded cooperation agreements with over thirty
universities abroad, mainly in Europe. Among these
are the Universities of Amsterdam, Bergen, Budapest, Florence,
Ghent, Leipzig, Munster, Navarra, Siena, Strasburg, Tübingen,
Uppsala, Vilnius, Institut d’Etudes Politiques (Science-Po)
Paris, University College London, Essex University, La Sapienza
University of Rome and the Autonoma University of Barcelona
and others. Collegium also works together with North American
institutions, including Scranton University, Emory University,
West Virginia University, the University of Ottawa,
and the Sogang University in Korea.
The major part of our international efforts consisits in enabling
and encouraging our students to earn international experience.
Collegium Civitas students are ten times more likely to study
abroad than are students from other Polish universities.
In particular, more than sixty of our students annually
may receive scholarships under the EU Socrates-Erasmus
program to spend one or two semesters abroad. Collegium
welcomes exchange students from our partner universities
and the admission process is streamlined to a minimum.

Each term Collegium Civitas welcomes visiting
international students for a semester.
The One Semester Abroad Program
at Collegium Civitas provides a valuable
learning and life experience. Students
may come either individually or as participants
of a larger group from a particular college
or university. PhD students may wish to spend
a semester at Collegium Civitas in order
to conduct research or attend courses
of interest.
Students participating in the Program
will be registered as non-degree students
and will be entitled to enrol on any course
from the curriculum, including language
courses.
However, they will not receive Collegium
Civitas’ student ID and student book. At the
end of their stay they will obtain an official Collegium
Civitas’ transcript.
One Semester Abroad
Program for International
Students
While reasonable efforts are made
to ensure that One Semester Abroad Program
students choose courses relevant to
their academic goals, ultimate responsibility
for such choices rests with the student
alone.
The One Semester Abroad Students’
financial responsibilities towards Collegium
Civitas consist in simply paying a regular
Tuition Fee per semester (4400 PLN)
– there is no application fee.

Housing
Although Collegium Civitas does not offer
on-campus accommodation, our International
Office staff assist students in finding an apartment.
At present a two bedroom apartment in central
Warsaw rents for $300 to $550 per month.
Rooms in dormitories operated by other colleges
and universities are available to Collegium students.
Rent for a double-occupancy room is about $130
per month.
Dining
Eating out in Warsaw is cheaper than in most other
European cities. A budget conscious person should
be able to manage on under $250 per month.
Warsaw has a wide variety of restaurants, ranging
from traditional Polish to ethnic and vegetarian.
There are several restaurants and cafes within
the Palace of Culture and Science itself
and in its immediate vicinity.

Collegium Civitas hosts a number of student
organizations including a basketball team, a soccer
team, a choir, drama group, and a Collegium Civitas
TV unit. There are also academic clubs for students
wishing to broaden the scope of their education
through sharing their knowledge with others.
An example is the Collegium Civitas Political
Science Society which has organized discussions
on a variety of subjects, and has hosted many
political and business luminaries. The Academic
Association for Social Science, an interdisciplinary
discussion forum, has an impressive record
of organizing a wide range of events, from panel
discussions to workshops on social skills
development.

is elected by the students self-government,
which itself is appointed through general
elections held each year.
With more than quarter of a million
students studying in the city, Warsaw offers

and theatres. A number of important
entertainment and performance art venues
are located in the Palace of Culture
