DMR
Digital Mobile Radio
The new Generation of Professional Mobile Radio
2
DMR is the new European standard for
the market introduction of a new digital
PMR-System for the RF-frequency
bands 4; 2 and 0.7 metres.
The target groups for DMR-systems are
those enterprises with higher grade of
service demands for PMR-radio transmissions
(e.g. energy providers, public
transportation companies, railway
companies, security services, freight
forwarding companies, emergency- and
rescue services, and fire brigades) as
well as other industries and authorities
that do not see the need to purchase a
cost intensive trunking radio system,
such as TETRA or TETRAPOL.
DMR is a practical digital technology for
private mobile radio purposes. Therefore,
from the user’s point of view it is
an excellent alternative solution when it
comes to the decision of whether to go, in
future, for the usage of public mobile network
resources (e.g. GSM-ASCI) in order
to provide PMR-features (no ownership
of the network) or to opt for the installation
and operation of an own complete
new trunking radio system.
DMR
The new Generation of Professional Mobile
Radio
Funkwerk is an extensively experienced system provider for wireless and fixed
line communication platforms. Funkwerk, therefore, is truly aware of the customer’s
needs. At a reasonable cost level, DMR makes it possible to launch additional
new network features throughout a smooth system migration phase
from the existing analogue radio environment to the new digital era with better
transmission quality and higher transmission capacity.
DMR allows the usage of the same radio frequency band for radio communications
as previously used for the old analogue network. This means that no new
radio network planning is required since no new (other and/or additional) sites
for base stations are needed. All such related additional infrastructure costs are
often underrated for system migrations from one technology to another. These
costs can be eliminated with DMR.
In order to meet this level of modern voice- and data communications for a
smooth system migration approach, Funkwerk will provide equipment that includes
two technologies; on the one hand, the phase- and frequency modulation
for existing analogue networks, and on the other hand, 4-FSK (FSK: Frequency
Shift Keying) modulation for DMR.
Funkwerk’s solution according to ETSI TS 102 398 Tier 2 will be provided with
the following specific features:
Technical Details
DMR Features
Fast call setup times and stabile high voice- and data transmission quality up to
the edges of network coverage at the same ERP levels (ERP: effective radio power),
as previously used within the analogue networks, are obvious improvements.
Due to short switching times within the transceiver hardware the provision of a
full-duplex mode for voice communication is possible by using one single radio
carrier only. Higher link capacity on the air interface at a given bandwidth can
be provided because of the two-timeslot TDMA-channel access scheme (TDMA:
Time Division Multiple Access) at one RF-carrier. In addition, the specified DMR
RF-carrier spacing is 12.5 kHz only.
Due to the TDMA-based discontinuous transmission, longer usage times can be
achieved at the same battery capacity for handhelds.
Further features include:
■ Transmission of calling status (e.g. busy tone, calling tone, user ID, etc.)
■ Easy integration of TCP/IP- protocol based packet data transmission
(6.5 kbps per timeslot)
■ Short Data Service (SDS)
The Funkwerk Solution
Based on the dual mode capability of Funkwerk’s solution, a useful platform
will be provided for enabling longer term system migrations from the analogue
to the digital era. Old terminal devices can be swapped step by step. After a
complete change out of the old terminals, the mode change from analogue to
DMR can be easily implemented.
The modular hardware design of the terminal equipment (optional GSMmodule
and/or GPS) as well as many interfaces allow for easy integration,
adaptation, as well as the new development of application environments (e.g.
GPS-tracking, dead-man’s-control, railway shunting operation, transponder
recognition, and many other applications).
