Anyone tasked with migrating enterprise applications to
the cloud understands that it is a labor-intensive and errorprone
process. Often applications have to be redeployed
from scratch, then manually re-installed and reconfigured,
usually from poor or nonexistent documentation. Migrations
are often further complicated by various patches that
have (or haven’t) been made over the lifetime of the
application.
The old fashioned method of capturing and moving server
virtual images is not much easier: server images are huge
to transfer and tightly coupled to the OS and supporting
infrastructure including security, back-up and monitoring.
Existing applications are often installed on older versions of
an operating system in the data center. Migrating to the
cloud requires a transformation and modernization of the
OS.
