2013 Season Outlook
PITCHING
Last year inexperience plagued the Lions at this position. All five pitchers
who saw action for the Mount in 2012, however, are back. At the top of
the rotation is senior Kim McElhinny, who led the Lions in appearances last
year with 19, including 17 games as a starting pitcher. Four sophomores
will be the other pitchers for the Lions. Among that group are: Leslie Biggs,
who led the Lions in ERA last year while appearing in 19 games; Danielle
Hausfeld, Erica D’Arcy and Taylor McElhinny. Both Hausfeld and Biggs had
14 or more appearances last year. Hausfield was second on the team last
season in ERA, while D’Arcy posted the team’s lone save. Taylor McElhinny
pitched just 13.2 innings last season, as she saw the majority of her
playing time at third base for the Mount.
“I am expecting really great things out of all of our pitchers,’’ Goderwis
says. “Biggs and Hausfeld were hurt some last year, too, and did not get as
many as starts as I would have liked. They are both healthy and I expect
them to do a great job for us this year. All of our pitchers will be used as
starters, and in relief this season.”
CATCHER
Griffith returns for her second season for the Lions in 2013, after a solid
all-around campaign last spring. She started and played in 35 games last
season and was the team’s lone player receiving all-conference status. Two
freshmen, Becky Owens and Pam Wisniewski, will be the primary backups at
catcher. Goderwis is excited to have depth at catcher so she will have the
chance to rest Griffith when needed. All three of the catchers also have the
ability to play either of the corner infield positions, says Goderwis.
OUTFIELD
The outfield will be led again by Sefton, who looks to hold down a starting
spot in either center or right field. Playing alongside Sefton will be
sophomore Megan Erdman, who started 38 games for the Lions last year,
and Moore, a sophomore, who was third on the team in RBI last year.
Others players that may see time in the outfield this spring for the Lions
are: sophomore transfer Paige Norton, junior Harley Huston; and freshmen
Sami Ives and Katie Mitchell.
DESIGNATED HITTER
Goderwis says that the team does not have a specific athlete in mind for
this position. Offense is what the team seeks, so Goderwis will be looking
for a strong batter in this spot.
Once again the Mount will have a very challenging schedule this season,
inside and outside the conference.
“Our schedule is very tough this season, just as it has been in the past
years,’’ Goderwis added. “I feel that you have to play good teams to make
you better.”
The Lions are scheduled to begin the new season on March 3 at home
in a doubleheader against Marietta College. Following a March 4 scheduled
doubleheader also at home against Oberlin College, the Lions will travel to
Kissimmee, Florida for their annual Spring Break trip, where they will play
eight games over four days. The Lions begin HCAC play on March 29 at 2012
HCAC champion Anderson University, and will play 16 conference games, with
conference action concluding at home on April 27 against Franklin College.
FIRST BASE
Last year the Lions used Kim McElhinny and D’Arcy as their first basemen,
and are expected to use that combo again at first when they are not
pitching. Last year Kim McElhinny was second on the team in at-bats,
hitting .241, and starting all 39 games. She gives the team needed power
in the line-up. D’Arcy was second on the team in putouts while playing first
base. Goderwis adds that Taylor McElhinny, Griffith and Heather Seurkamp
might also see some time at first base this spring.
SECOND BASE
The starting second base position will most likely be held down again by
returning junior Katie Gregg. Last year Gregg started 33 of the 39 games,
and she is back for her third season. Two freshmen, Megan James and Nikki
Martin, also look to push for playing time at this spot, leaving Goderwis
and the Lions’ coaching staff pleased with the depth at this position.
SHORTSTOP
At shortstop the Lions return sophomore Mallory Wright, who started 34
games for the Lions last year and led the team in batting average, hitting
at a .364 clip. She was also first on the team in hits with 39, first in stolen
bases with 15, and second in slugging percentage at .404. Backing up
Wright will be sophomore Ashley Moore, who played a variety of positions
last year, and James.
THIRD BASE
Taylor McElhinny and Seurkamp saw most of the playing time last season for
the Mount at the hot corner and will compete to start there this spring, as
will freshman Claire Wehby, who Goderwis is excited to see play. Seurkamp hit
.268 last season in 41 at-bats, while Taylor McElhinny gives the team good
power at the position, leading the team in 2013 with two home runs and
19 RBI. Wisniewski and Owens might also see time at this spot.
Mount sophomore pitcher/infielder Taylor McElhinny led the Lions in 2012 with two
home runs and 19 RBI.
