STUDIO ARTS
ADVANCED CERAMICS STUDIO

Advanced levels
This studio course is geared to the student who is motivated
to undertake ambitious individual work in clay and further
their understanding of ceramic art. Self-exploration is
afforded students who have demonstrated proficiency in
working with clay but looking for guidance, advice and
critique from the instructor. The goal for this course is
to provide the advanced student the opportunity to grow
and to produce desired but previously unattainable work.
Student work will reflect well thought-out and executed
projects, including aesthetic decisions, an increase in
material handling and an increased proficiency with glazing
techniques.

POTTERY LAB
Labs allow currently enrolled ceramics students to work
independently outside of class time during any lab listed
below. A lab monitor will be present.

YOUTH CLASSES
MUDSLINGERS
Christopher Loughlin
This fun and fully hands-on course is for 7 – 11 year-old
artists who like to get their hands dirty (but not really
throwing stuff in class)! Students will be surprised to see
how easy it is to make imaginative clay sculptures using the
pinch, coil, and slab techniques of hand-building. Students
will finish their creations in colorful non-toxic, lead-free
glazes. All materials included in tuition.

SPRING ART CLASSES AT THE MUSEUM

This class will meet at the Museum on Saturday mornings
and children ages 5 to 10 can explore a multitude of
mediums and experience the art world first hand by visiting
the exhibits. Art on display in the galleries will be explored
and used for inspiration and utilizing the educational
facilities the VBMA has to offer to create beautiful art
works. Many techniques and materials will be utilized and
demonstrated, including clay, chalk, pastels, watercolors and
tempura paints. All materials included.

NARRATIVE HISTORY VS. FICTION:
GERMANY 1933
AS SEEN FROM TWO RECENT BEST SELLERS

February 27, 1933 was Weimar Germany’s 9/11. On that
day, Hitler’s henchmen burned down the Reichstag (the
German Parliament), inspiring the fear and prejudice that
six years later helped start World War II. Erik Larson writes
in his latest bestselling work In the Garden of the Beasts
a remarkable story about William E. Dodd, scholar of
Jeffersonian Democracy, who becomes America’s ambassador
to Germany in 1933, a year that proved to be a turning point
in history.
Ursula Hegi, in her recently published novel Children and
Fire, returns to her imaginary village of Burgdorf to describe
a single day, February 27, 1934, exactly one year after
the burning of the Reichstag. This short novel is a lyrical
and haunting tale, with Hegi narrating how just one day
transforms the lives of Burgdorf’s townspeople. Come join
us in a lively and engaging discussion about how these two
popular writers approach the same historical event, but from
two distinctly different perspectives.

STUDIO ARTS
BEGINNING ACRYLIC PAINTING WORKSHOP

Discover the fundamental techniques of acrylic painting,
brush handling, color mixing and important finishing
touches. Bring a few clear photos of images you would like
to paint. Students have the option of purchasing or bringing
their own supplies for the workshop or paying a $30 material
fee on the first day of class for use of all the necessary
materials for the workshop.

INTRODUCTION TO WATERCOLOR WORKSHOP
Marie Morrow
This course will cover wet into wet techniques and how to
use multiple layers of color through glazing to get rich color
and depth into your work. Students will learn from lecture,
demonstration and with individual guidance from the
instructor. No drawing skills necessary. Bring some inspiring
photos or choose from a selection of images supplied by the
instructor.
