This course <strong>of</strong>fers new and exciting ways <strong>of</strong> learning how to<br />

start and finish compositions with colored pencils. Students<br />

will also create a color chart and use experimental methods<br />

combining different mixed media.<br />

ARCHITECTURE OF THE FACE<br />

This course is for anyone wanting to increase their ability<br />

to capture a likeness in their portraits. Students will learn<br />

the fundamental tools needed to see critical relationships<br />

and organization <strong>of</strong> the features. The class will discuss and<br />

practice each feature, learning the basic structure <strong>of</strong> each,<br />

with discussion on variations in ethnicity and age. Students<br />

will work primarily in pencil with some use <strong>of</strong> charcoal and<br />

conté crayon. The class will work from life and photographs.<br />

DRAWING ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE BRAIN<br />

Learning to draw is an adventure when inspired by the<br />

book Drawing on the Right Side <strong>of</strong> the Brain. In this<br />

course, students will explore new ways <strong>of</strong> enhancing their<br />

powers <strong>of</strong> observation and putting it on paper. This course<br />

is an excellent choice for those who desire to improve their<br />

drawing skills.<br />

PASTELS<br />

IS IT PAINTING<br />

This course will uncover the important components <strong>of</strong> a<br />

well-designed painting, not just a pretty picture. Students<br />

with a comfort level in their medium will explore the<br />

arrangement and relationships <strong>of</strong> shapes, values, and colors<br />

as well as vectors and the painting “mortar.” Through the<br />

study <strong>of</strong> masterworks, demonstrations, and exercises, the<br />

class will experiment with finding the painting structure that<br />

works best. The course content applies to any genre from<br />

landscapes to still life or abstract work. The instructor will be<br />

working in pastel, but all painterly media are welcome.<br />

ZEN OF PLEIN AIR<br />

Painting directly from nature is a marvelous practice at<br />

staying present, stimulating the senses and disciplining<br />

the mind. Working outside (en plein air), artists surrender<br />

control over externals and maintain their creative focus on<br />

the beauty around us. This course will provide sound and<br />

simple instruction on the technical elements (the “how<br />

to” hints) helpful when working outdoors. The class will<br />

also address the internal processes that support the creative<br />

qualities: discipline, maintaining intention, and willingness<br />

to embrace uncertainty. All mediums welcome. Experience<br />

with your selected medium is helpful. The instructor will be<br />

working in s<strong>of</strong>t pastel.<br />

WATERCOLOR<br />

INTRODUCTION TO WATERCOLOR<br />

Beginner levels<br />

Students will explore this fun, versatile medium and learn<br />

how to use it creatively and with confidence. By painting still<br />

lifes, landscapes and other subjects, this course will touch<br />

on the principles <strong>of</strong> painting, value studies, color mixing,<br />

negative painting, washes and more. Each assignment will<br />

include a detailed demonstration.<br />

WATERCOLOR 1-2-3<br />

Students will do things they never thought were possible such<br />

as mix colors, paint a flower or a lemon or try a landscape.<br />

The instructor will give step-by-step demonstrations to ease<br />

the anxiety <strong>of</strong> tackling an entire painting alone. Students<br />

with no experience and a desire to try something new and<br />

exciting are preferred.<br />

THE PORTRAIT IN WATERCOLOR<br />

Amazing! In this fast-paced course students will be surprised<br />

and delighted at what they can accomplish. Students will<br />

achieve freedom as they explore the human face with this<br />

extraordinary, spontaneous medium. A general foundation <strong>of</strong><br />

watercolor and drawing will be helpful.<br />

PAINTING THE LANDSCAPE IN WATERCOLOR<br />

Intermediate and advanced levels<br />

This course will explore various aspects <strong>of</strong> painting<br />

the landscape in watercolor. Concepts <strong>of</strong> Swedish-born<br />

American Impressionist John Carlson will be employed,<br />

such as angles and planes <strong>of</strong> the landscape interpreted by<br />

the design arrangements <strong>of</strong> a painting’s major masses <strong>of</strong><br />

value and color. Watercolor techniques will be demonstrated<br />

and students will explore different aspects <strong>of</strong> the landscape<br />

through class projects.<br />
