Prudential Foundation Signs a $2 Million Grant to Support<br />

Global Citizenship, an Important 21st Century Skill<br />

In 2009, the Prudential Foundation partnered with <strong>The</strong> Wash<strong>in</strong>gton <strong>Center</strong> to create the Prudential<br />

Foundation Global Citizens Program. <strong>The</strong> program provides undergraduate and graduate students<br />

from select countries the opportunity to spend a semester <strong>in</strong> Wash<strong>in</strong>gton, D.C. <strong>in</strong> an experiential<br />

learn<strong>in</strong>g program that enables them to understand firsthand the role the U.S. government plays <strong>in</strong><br />

the context of an <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly <strong>in</strong>terdependent world.<br />

To date, 75 college students from 26 universities <strong>in</strong> India, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan have<br />

received scholarships . <strong>The</strong> students <strong>in</strong>terned at nonprofit organizations, federal agencies and<br />

consult<strong>in</strong>g firms such as the U.S. Japan Council, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, PBS and<br />

the Mitsubishi Electric America Foundation. While ga<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g professional experience and an<br />

understand<strong>in</strong>g of U.S. public policy and bus<strong>in</strong>ess relations, the students also participated <strong>in</strong> lectures<br />

from prom<strong>in</strong>ent guest speakers, attended network<strong>in</strong>g events, presented f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs from a civic<br />

engagement project and completed academic courses led by faculty from <strong>The</strong> Wash<strong>in</strong>gton <strong>Center</strong>.<br />

<strong>The</strong>y also had the opportunity to visit Prudential’s Wash<strong>in</strong>gton, D.C. office and its headquarters <strong>in</strong><br />

Newark, New Jersey, to learn about Prudential’s corporate values.<br />

Participants have returned to their communities equipped with the skills and motivation to make a<br />

real impact as civically engaged, socially aware citizens.<br />

In 2012, the foundation reaffirmed its commitment to the program by giv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>The</strong> Wash<strong>in</strong>gton<br />

<strong>Center</strong> a $2 million grant. With the cont<strong>in</strong>ued support from the Prudential Foundation, the<br />

Prudential Global Citizens Program will expand over the next three years and <strong>in</strong>clude a new student<br />

bus<strong>in</strong>ess competition, an <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>in</strong> student scholarships from 75 to 120 and an expansion <strong>in</strong><br />

university participation to Ch<strong>in</strong>a and Brazil.<br />
