Vice President Dick Cheney Speaks to Interns About<br />
His First <strong>Year</strong>s <strong>in</strong> D.C.<br />
On April 23, 2012, <strong>The</strong> Wash<strong>in</strong>gton <strong>Center</strong> hosted former Vice President Dick Cheney for the<br />
Alan K. Simpson–Norman Y. M<strong>in</strong>eta Leaders Series (SMLS). Only a month after his heart<br />
transplant, Dick Cheney was the featured speaker dur<strong>in</strong>g a one-hour discussion moderated by the<br />
senior producer of C-SPAN, Steve Scully.<br />
Major topics covered dur<strong>in</strong>g the discussion <strong>in</strong>cluded Mr. Cheney’s recovery from his heart<br />
transplant, his life post-surgery and how grateful he is for the donor program. In addition, he spoke<br />
to the audience about provid<strong>in</strong>g Mitt Romney with advice on what to look for <strong>in</strong> pick<strong>in</strong>g a vice<br />
presidential candidate. Rather than look<strong>in</strong>g for someone who can help w<strong>in</strong> electoral votes or fill<br />
a certa<strong>in</strong> racial profile, Mr. Cheney stressed, f<strong>in</strong>d someone who is capable of fill<strong>in</strong>g the shoes of a<br />
potential president, should someth<strong>in</strong>g happen.<br />
Mr. Cheney also shared with students his first experience <strong>in</strong> Wash<strong>in</strong>gton, D.C. as an <strong>in</strong>tern for<br />
Wiscons<strong>in</strong> Congressman William A. Steiger and told personal stories of his early years work<strong>in</strong>g with<br />
Donald Rumsfeld <strong>in</strong> the White House as a staff assistant.<br />
Referenc<strong>in</strong>g passages from his memoir, “In My Time”, Mr. Cheney provided <strong>in</strong>sight <strong>in</strong>to how he<br />
built a successful and diversified career <strong>in</strong> public service and the private <strong>in</strong>dustry.<br />
“Intern<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the nation’s capital gives students exposure to differ<strong>in</strong>g political ideologies and<br />
philosophies,” said Mike Smith, president of <strong>The</strong> Wash<strong>in</strong>gton <strong>Center</strong>. “Introduc<strong>in</strong>g students to<br />
perspectives from both sides of the aisle, from prom<strong>in</strong>ent leaders, is at the heart of our efforts to<br />
forge <strong>in</strong>formed leaders able to attack society’s most serious problems.”<br />
Students from seven universities asked questions about Mr. Cheney’s early days <strong>in</strong> Wash<strong>in</strong>gton, D.C.,<br />
passages from his book and his professional trajectory.<br />
