Central Elementary
ITEMS FOR THE GOOD OF USD 320
• Central Elementary Site Council will host our annual Author's Day on May 15.
Parents, Grandparents and members of the community are invited to come to
Central gym at a designated time to hear students’ authentic stories. Students
have worked all year on writing projects they will share during this time. All
students will receive a medal for their work in writing.
• Author Tammy Bronson recently visited all students at Central. She is the author
of many children's books. During her visit she shared how she writes and revises
her stories before they are actually published. Another theme in her talk with
students was the connection between reading and writing. She emphasized how
much good writers read and how good readers write about what they read.
• Central PTO recently hosted our annual taco dinner and basket raffle. It was a
wonderful evening for all. PTO earned $3,091 that will be spent to support
student learning at Central.
• Three second grade teachers from Bergman Elementary School in Manhattan
visited our second grade to observe guided reading and writing. They went away
with many wonderful ideas to support their own classroom instruction.
• On May 1st teachers from USD 333, Concordia will visit K-2 teachers to observe
guided reading.
• First grade made a day of the health fair by having guest speakers help with
activities that support good health and exercise. Students learned about safety as
well with the Wamego Police Department. Other activities included making
healthy snacks and learning about the food guide pyramid and how to include
healthy activities everyday.
West Elementary
• Third grade teacher Sherry Helus has been nominated for the 2008 Presidential
Award for Excellence in Math teaching. As part of this process, she was required
to complete an extensive application and was videotaped teaching math to her
students. The application, video, and supporting materials have been submitted to
the state selection committee. Third grade teacher Teri Dow won this award for
our state in 2006 and was a national finalist in 2007. Mrs. Dow has also been
asked to serve on the state selection committee for the 2008 Presidential Award
for Excellence in Math and Science Teaching.
• PTO fundraising efforts next year will be geared toward finishing the Plasma
TV/Interwrite SchoolPad combos in the remaining classrooms. Currently, 12
classrooms are equipped with the 50” Plasma TV’s and we have purchased 8
Interwrite SchoolPads. We will need to purchase 5 additional TV’s and 9
additional Interwrite SchoolPads to complete this project. The teachers are using
these new technology resources on a daily basis and wish to thank the West PTO
and USD 320 Board of Education for their financial support of these instructional
tools.
• During the school year, a group of students in third through fifth grade attended
morning sessions to build creativity and cooperation called “Odyssey of the
Mind”. Their final products were showcased in an assembly at West Elementary
on April 15. In the Odyssey classes, students learned to plan a project with a
group and adhere to guidelines. The students then worked together to build the
project, which included many modifications to the original design. The students
chose two different projects this year to focus on called “Road Rally” and “Tee
Structure”. The object in Road Rally was to design and build a vehicle that would
transverse a course and complete tasks along the way. In Tee Structure, the
students were to build a structure out of balsa wood and glue that would hold a
maximum of 10 golf balls and the largest amount of weight.
• West Elementary students performed well at the State Robotics Meet held in
Manhattan on April 19 at Susan B. Anthony Middle School.
Individual student participants were Kentin Brummett, Tristan Mansfield, and
Trey Schmidt. Teams from West included ELC (Colton Hitch, Levi Hannan, and
Ethan Artzer); Black Sabbath (Sam Long and Blake Fair); HEAT (True
Mussetter, Maddie Vontz, Allison Seufert, and Brandi Peverley); and 4 Evil
Bunnies (Cody Filbert, Cameron Chapman, and Vance Lacey). West Elementary
students competed in Capture the Flag and the Maze.
HEAT received second place in Capture the Flag and the Maze. Black Sabbath
received third place in Capture the Flag. Congratulations to each of these West
students and a special thank you to fifth grade Robotics Club sponsors Teri Dow
and Angie McCune and Enhanced Learning teacher Sharon Eckhoff for their
efforts in preparing our students for competition. We look forward to next year’s
Robotics competitions.
• On April 25, third grade students listened to a special presentation by Tim
Gogolski, a District Conservationist out of Lyndon, Kansas. Mr. Gogolski used a
“rainfall simulator” to teach students the value of no-till farming practices in soil
conservation and water infiltration. The rainfall simulator demonstrated the
differences in runoff for four different types of fields—100% soil cover with
residue, 30% soil cover, bare soil with no cover, and 100% soil cover with
undisturbed soil. This last scenario creates the least amount of runoff. The
rainfall simulator presentation was connected with district science curriculum
objectives for third grade pertaining to different types of soils, erosion, and
conservation.
• The Early Riser’s Choir had their Spring Tour on April 29. They performed for
the Gran Villas, Valley Vista Good Samaritan Center, and Grandview Suites.
music with the residents of these facilities!
• Fifth grade band students presented a concert on Tuesday, May 6 in the Wamego
Middle School gym. This concert also included WMS students in grades sixth
concert with the sixth grade choir on May 13 at Wamego Middle School. The
music begins at 7:00. All are invited to hear each choir perform their own
selections, as well as the two choirs combined for one large choir performance. It
is sure to be an evening of great music!
• On April 30, several teachers and the building principal from Concordia visited
West and Central Elementary Schools to observe in classrooms and learn more
about our reading instructional practices and Rigby Literacy by Design reading
promote and organize our label saving efforts!
• Mini-Society is in full swing for third grade students. Students have established
their own society, printed their own currency, opened their own businesses, and
created their own government. This learning experience will help students learn
the parade. Fourth graders will “become” their assigned vocabulary word by
dressing in costume and providing a definition of their vocabulary word. This
activity promotes using the instructional strategy of “non-linguistic
representations” for students to expand their vocabulary base and deepen their
understanding of a variety of words. Thank you to the fourth grade teachers for
organizing this unique learning experience for our students.
the spring months. In April, students played tennis at the new Wamego
Recreation Complex. This month, fifth graders will travel to Manhattan to bowl
at the K-State Student Union. Fifth graders always enjoy these special
opportunities that emphasize physical activities for life-long enjoyment.
our students. At their last meeting, they worked to finalize plans for a movie
