Steelstown cause upset
WITH only two games in
men’s football going ahead at
the weekend it was the turn of
the minor football championship
to take centre stage last
week.
Last year’s beaten finalists,
Steelstown pulled off the
shock of the quarter-finals
with a 2-8 to 2-6 win over a well
fancied Foreglen side. Two
goals from county minor star
Stephen Cleary proved the key
scores for the city lads while
although the result was rough
justice on Foreglen’s James
Bradley who rattled up a tally
of 2-1 for the losers.
Another member of the
county panel was outstanding
midfield for the Ballyarnott
side as they inflicted a surprise
loss on the O’Brien’s who
have been undefeated on their
run to the minor league final.
Steelstown will meet
Slaughtneil in the last four after
they overcame reigning
champions Dungiven by 1-13 to
0-8 with Kevin O’Neill playing
a starting role by kicking 10
points.
Slaughtneil led 0-8 to 0-4 at
half time but took control in
the second half, with Peter
Convery grabbing a goal to
seal victory. Kilrea easily accounted
for Swatragh in their
quarter-final on a 3-17 to 0-3
scoreline.
Again this weekend there
will be a strictly limited programme
of action, there are no
games down for decision in the
county football leagues with
two Junior Championship first
round ties between Magilligan
and Lissan and Doire Colmcille
and Sean Dolan’s the only
big ball games down for decision.
Those games take place
on Sunday evening at 5.00 p.m.
DEFENSIVE GRIT...Mickey McKinney had a solid game at full-back as Steelstown minors defeated Foreglen at Celtic Park
at Desertmartin and Celtic
Park respectively.
In hurling the senior league
is nearing it’s conclusion with
the final two rounds of games
taking place tonight and on
Sunday. Lavey, who are already
guaranteed a top two
spot and the automatic Championship
semi-final berth,
need three points from their
last two games to be sure of
winning the league title and
they play Slaughtneil at Emmett
Park tonight. If Kevin
Lynch’s can claim four points
from their two games against
Swatragh the first of which
takes place tonight at Davitt
Park then they will join Lavey
in the Championship semi-finals,
indeed were Lavey to
beat Banagher in the final
game then two points would be
enough for the Dungiven side.
However, if Kevin Lynch’s slip
up in their remaining games
the Banagher can still force a
play-off for the remaining automatic
semi-final spot.
» MAIN GAME
KEVIN LYNCH’S V SWATRAGH
Kevin Lynch’s can forego the early round of the Senior
Hurling Championship if they can manage to
beat Swatragh home and away in the league this
weekend. The first game takes place this evening
at Davitt Park where the Dungiven men will
look to the likes of county captain Kevin
Hinphey and still potent scoring machine
Geoffrey McGonigle. Swatragh’s prospects
for the summer have been severely dented
by the fact that their most prolific forward
Ruairi Convery is currently on the other side
of the Atlantic however the Lynch’s will also
have a notable absentee in the form of Liam
Hinphey who part of Paddy Crozier’s county
football panel which is preparing the
forthcoming All-Ireland quarter-final clash
with Dublin.
Club Derry summer
camps a great success
DERRY Football Development manager
Chris Collins has hailed the recent Club
Derry Gaelic games summer camps as a
great success.
Last week saw the Under 13 boys summer
camp take place with boys from almost
every club in the county taking part and being
given expert coaching and advice on a
range of issues.
“The camp went brilliantly and I think
the boys all took a lot out of it. Myself and
Ronan Gallagher, the former Fermanagh
player co-ordinated it over the week and
the boys were given advice on all aspects of
the game. On Monday Andrew McAlynn
put them through a fitness test which they
were given the results of later in the week.
On Tuesday Armagh Under 21 coach and
Cavan midfielder Nicholas Walsh gave
them a session on core strength and defensive
play. On Wednesday Tyrone’s Paul
Rouse took seminar on atttacking play. On
Thursday Ryan Mellon gave them a talk on
his experiences of winning an All-Ireland
while Derry minor manager Killian Conlan
and minor full-forward Gavin McGeechan
had a question and answer session with
them.”
And Collins believes that the event will
prove very beneficial to the players who
SUMMER CAMP SUCCESS..Chris Collins
took part.
“Throughout the week you see skill levels
and confidence levels improving. I think
the boys took a lot out of it they after the
core strength session a lot of the boys went
out and bought the Swiss ball that they had
been using which shows that they were
taking it all on board.”
The football camp was only one of a series
of such events with a camogie camp
and hurling camp having taken place in
previous weeks.
