Monaghan still in hunt for
quarter-final berth
Tyrone
set to join
Armagh in
draw for
last eight
With teams entering the final
round of the TG4
Ladies All-Ireland Senior
Championship group
phase this weekend, there's still
much to play for in each of the
pools with a number of Ulster
sides pushing hard for
quarter-final places.
In Group One, Mayo
lead the way ahead of
Dublin on points difference.
With two
wins each already under
their belt, both
teams have already
qualified for the
knockout stages, with
Kerry and Waterford
exiting the championship
race. This
weekend sees the top
two go head-to-head in
From an Ulster
perspective we
have Armagh
safely
through,
Tyrone looking
good for
qualification
Breffni Park in the first televised
game on Saturday evening with
group superiority at stake, as
well as what would be a moraleboosting
win ahead of the quarter-finals.
Mayo have been rampant
thus far, with Cora
Staunton once again proving to
be scorer-in-chief. They have
amassed 38 points and conceded
just 15, compared to the Dubs totals
of 39 for and 35 against. Waterford
were tipped by many to
mount a challenge, as were Kerry,
but in the end the Munster
sides just failed to live
with their compatriots
and play this weekend
in a tie which is effectively
meaningless, although
both will be
keen to avoid the
dreaded wooden spoon
and finishing bottom of
the table.
Group Two sees
Monaghan enter the final
round of fixtures
still with a shout of a
quarter-final berth.
Owen McNally's troops
currently sit joint second in the
table alongside Galway, with the
Connacht girls having a superior
score difference. Cork lead the
way with two wins, while both
Galway and Monaghan have secured
wins over whipping boys
Roscommon. It's a Clones showdown
for McNally's side this Saturday
as they take on Galway
with that last eight spot up for
grabs. A 3-18 to 0-5 win over
Roscommon set the Monaghan
girls on their way, before suffering
a 4-11 to 0-11 defeat at the
hands of Cork last time out. That
in itself is no shame, as Galway
suffered the same fate to the Rebelettes,
going down 2-13 to 1-11.
The balance of power rests with
Galway ahead of the clash, but
with home advantage and nothing
to lose, the Oriel girls will
throw everything they have at
their western opponents and will
have no intention of exiting the
championship race without a
fight. If Monaghan surprise Galway
early on, bagging themselves
some crucial early scores,
then they could well find their
name in the drum for the quarter-final
draw. It'll be tough but
they may just be able to sneak it.
Donegal are out of the shakeup
in Group Three, Tyrone's victory
over their neighbours last
weekend ending the Tir Connail
girls’ interest in proceedings and
confirming another disappointing
season.
However, they could yet have a
bearing on the final standings in
the group as they play table-toppers
Laois this weekend. Should
they gain a result there, it could
well pave the way for Tyrone to
overtake Laois and top the table,
provided the Red Hands can beat
Sligo. Donegal will be keen to
take something from the campaign,
and the management will
hope for one last big push before
they break up for the season.
Tyrone have put themselves in
a good position courtesy of their
11-point win last Saturday over
Donegal. They currently occupy
second place in the table, ahead
of Sligo on points difference, and
will be hoping to still be in that
position after Saturday evenings
