Pastoral Care at Aiglon College
March 2013
“Relationships between students and staff, and among students
themselves, are extremely important and a caring, friendly
atmosphere is promoted throughout the school; it falls to all of us
to set high standards of behaviour and to invest our energy into
helping everyone in our community to thrive.” Claire Chalcraft
Our Personal, Social, Health and Emotional
education programme continues to have an impact on
the lives of our students in developing strategies and
skills essential for living happy and healthy lives. Aiglon
College will be hosting its first Pastoral Care
Conference 12th and 13th June this year when we
hope to be joined by House Parents, medical staff and
Pastoral leaders from other international schools. The
conference theme is: Surviving to thriving - the
adolescent journey and the keynote speaker is
Jackie Cox. Aiglon
staff will be able to
attend all or part of the
day and students too will
take part in sessions on
developing
resilience.
Other themes this term have been nutrition and
positive body image as well as sexual health and
relationships education. Students have taken part in
workshops and lectures with trained medical and
experienced pastoral staff where age-appropriate
topics have been discussed and questions answered
frankly and in a supportive environment.
On the topic of nutrition, healthy eating and
positive body image students attended talks given
by two visiting speakers: Ms Joey Bull, international
fitness expert and clinical nutritionist Ms Ella Oldman.
Making healthy choices about food and how
we fuel our bodies to enjoy good health and stay in
shape affects us all. Students and indeed parents are
interested in food issues, as shown by the results of our
satisfaction surveys. As a consequence, we have begun
a series of healthy eating projects, the first of which
focuses on healthier breakfasts: lower in sugar, higher in
fibre and with protein sources, porridge, fruit and
yoghurts, nuts and seeds available.
Occasionally food can be used by some individuals as a
way of exercising control over a part of their lives and
unhealthy relationships with food can be the result;
sometimes becoming dysfunctional and leading to disordered
eating patterns or a distorted view of the
importance of food, nutrition and self-image. Aiglon
pastoral and health centre staff work together with
outside professionals such as counsellors, doctors and
nutritionists to support individuals who need extra
help in this area. Similarly Aiglon staff are pro-active in
helping students who want to lose weight, be healthier
and benefit from the activities and challenges which
underpin our guiding principles: the balanced
development of mind, body and spirit.

Winter 2013 has seen amazing snow conditions, great success in ski racing and superb performances on
expeditions
Student Council News:
Members of the student council, led by James
Stevenson and Rotana Shaker, planned and organised a
Valentine’s Dance for the senior school, the theme
for which was ‘RED’. They decorated Exeter Hall and
Nick Makharishvili organised the DJs, Kirill Kluyev, Jean
Baraschi and Alex Biniashvili.
In addition to the Dance, the Student Council planned
and implemented the sale of ‘candygrams’. 5th and
L6th form Student Council reps Tijana Suvacarov and
Prokhor Kuznetsov along with Lana Bogdanov and
Anton Zatorskiy were in charge of planning and
buying, packaging and distributing the special packs of
candies. Overall 370 bags of candy were sold and sent
out to students and staff!
I am very proud of the work this student council has
done and particularly impressive has been the way in
which they have supported each other throughout a
busy and productive term: congratulaions especially to
James, Rotana, Lucy, Nick, Lana, Anton, Tijana, Prokhor
and Nawaf.
We congratulate all our ski racers and intrepid
expeditioners who have excelled themselves this term,
rising to challenges with courage and determination.
The Valentine’s Dance, organised by The Student Council and the Delaware Talent Show were great fun...
