Pian-Upe Wildlife Reserve: biological and socio-economic survey iii EXECUTIVE SUMMARY A baseline biological and socio-economic survey of Pian-Upe Wildlife Reserve was conducted between October and December 1996 and April and June 1997. One hundred and forty-one species of flowering plant were identified, and four vegetation types were described: grassland and wooded grassland, which covers most of the reserve, riverine woodland, kopjes, and cultivated land. The vegetation is of enormous conservation value as it covers a large area and is essentially undisturbed. Thirty-one species of large mammals were identified, and distribution maps and information of habitat use is provided. There has been a drastic decline in the numbers of large mammals over the past 30 years, and most are still under severe threat from poaching. Over a third are of international conservation concern. Twelve species of small rodent, three species of shrew, five species of bat, and 11 species of reptile were identified. Further taxonomic work on specimens collected but not identified at the time of writing is likely to identify more species. Rapid and Participatory Rural Appraisal (R/PRA) methods were used in two primarily Sebei and two Pian villages. The main issues identified were insecurity and poor food security. In addition, the reserve was identified as an important source of many natural resources for the Pian in particular. Attitudes towards UWA and conservation are relatively positive, although the heavily armed Pian and the Pokot have the upper hand, and the major threat remains poaching. A potential conflict between development and conservation objectives is a resettlement project in the part of the Sebei CWA recommended for inclusion in a new National Park.
