Bill Welch and Laurae Fortner-Welch
Cedaredge is a Perfect Community to Call Home
Bill and Laurae bought land and moved to Cedaredge
about five years ago. They had been living in Alaska
for nearly 30 years, where Bill worked for the National
Park Service and where they ran a large llama farm. Bill
and Laurae had met and married in Denver; many of
their weekends and vacations were spent enjoying the
outdoors in western Colorado.

When it came time to retire, memories of the San Juans
and the Grand Mesa area were vivid in their minds.
Their search started and ended on Colorado’s western
slope. Cedaredge was just what they were looking
for. The small town friendliness, fruit trees, wonderful
climate, blue sky and outdoor recreational opportunities
were perfect for their needs.
Always involved in civic activities in whatever community they call home, Bill and Laurae
soon were volunteering in Cedaredge. When it came time to update their wills, they
sought out the Community Foundation as part of their estate plan.
Their planned gift is designated to support several causes that are important to them.
Bill has asked that part of fund be used to provide and maintain outdoor recreation
opportunities as his passion is enjoying nature and the out-of-doors. Laurae wants part
of their fund to support local visual and performing arts activities and the library. “Music,
books, and painting have all been a great part of my life and I want to be able to share
those things I love and pass on the opportunity to participate in them to others. Our fund
is set up to do that: support outdoor recreation and cultural opportunities, broadly defined,
to benefit future citizens of Cedaredge.”
