Thomas B. Beard Fund
Celebrating a Lifetime of Community Involvement
Tom Beard was a successful real estate
developer in Florida when he moved to
Colorado in 1993 to accept the position of
President of Battlement Mesa. He worked
for more than a decade building the
planned community south of Parachute in
western Garfield County.
Tom came to love the landscape and
lifestyle of western Colorado. He and his
wife, Pam, owned a small ranch that they
ultimately placed under conservation
easement to preserve its beauty.
The Power of Endowments
Gifts that Keep on Giving, Keep on Growing
Tom always believed in working and
contributing at the “grass roots” level
in all things that mattered most to him:
politics, education, affordable housing,
and the development of neighborhoods
where people could live well and thrive.
His wife set up a memorial fund to remind people of the difference he made in his life.
“I think a charitable endowment fund is a beautiful way to pay tribute to someone I love
who made a distinct difference in our community. This fund will allow me to support
things that mattered to us while continuing to remember him.”
Endowments have been described as the charitable gift that lasts. Donors
interested in permanently supporting their favorite charity are invited to
consider a named endowment fund at WCCF.
For example, Mrs. Altruistic Smith currently makes an annual gift of $500
to her favorite charity.
Mrs. Smith can establish an endowment of $10,000. The endowment gift could
be made now or as an end-of-life gift. Every year, her favorite charity would
typically receive a 5% payout in Mrs. Smith’s name.
Assuming 8% annual earnings, in 20 years the $10,000 endowment will have
grown to $14,860, plus the charity would have received a total of $12,150.
And this gift will keep on growing and giving in Mrs. Smith’s name.
Donor-advised
funds are the
most flexible
of our endowed funds. Earnings
are available every year for the
donor family to grant to charities
of their choosing.
Children, grandchildren and other
family members are frequently
involved in the process,
continuing the tradition of family
philanthropy in memory of the
donor.
Donor-advised funds are an
attractive alternative to private
foundations; all legal, tax and
administrative requirements are
handled by our organization.
