having played and coached at every
level of the game, Scott dean, director
of the iMg Soccer academy, utilizes his
background and experience to help the
program’s players achieve their goals.
bUIlDInG
talent
It’s the early 1990s in Connecticut and Scott
Dean has a full schedule, balancing playing for a
semi-pro soccer team with owning/operating two
businesses.
When a local high school asked him to coach
the soccer team, he agreed more out of his love for
the game than a predetermined plan to become a
soccer coach. but a funny thing happened when he
showed up to run his first practice.
“I knew as soon as I stepped on the field I
would have a career change,” he remembers.
now, more than 20 years later, Dean is still
coaching soccer, now in the role of Director of
the IMG Soccer academy. However, if not for the
discerning eye of an elementary school teacher, he
may never have even started playing the sport.
GeTTING STArTed
Growing up in a small Connecticut town near
the University of Connecticut, Dean often watched
the powerhouse Huskie men’s teams. His town,
though, had no youth soccer programs. one day
while kicking a ball around at recess, Dean caught
the attention of a teacher, who saw natural skill
in raw form. Without many other options, Dean’s
father, a former semi-pro baseball player with no
soccer playing experience but an admirer of the
game, decided to start a club.
Dean immediately took to the sport and quickly
progressed through the ranks, eventually choosing
Green Mountain College over Clemson for the
school’s business program and availability to play
immediately. Dean excelled at Green Mountain,
finishing his career among the top 10 scoring leaders
in school history and later earning a spot in the
Green Mountain athletics Hall of fame.
With no MlS or a-league in existence at that
time, Dean played semi-pro soccer for eight years
(“If you won, you got paid. If you lost, sometimes
you didn’t get paid”), while also launching a yacht
management business and a soccer/surf shop.
However, his first shot at coaching forever
changed his life’s course.
GoING BAcK To coLLeGe
after successfully coaching various local high
school and olympic Development Program teams
in new Jersey, Dean sold his yacht management
business, liquidated his soccer/surf shop and took
a job as an assistant coach at the University of
Rhode Island. He helped the Rams to a top-five
national ranking before taking on the role of head
coach at Stony brook University.
Despite being in its final stages of converting to
a D-I athletic school, Stony brook at the time had
one of the worst men’s soccer programs in the nation.
“It was from one extreme to the other,” Dean
said of the switch from Rhode Island to Stony
brook. “It was a huge awakening.”
Within four years, Dean took the team from
one win to a top-25 national ranking – the first of its
kind for any sport in the school’s history.
looking to cut down on travel, Dean and his
wife eventually went to texas, where Dean oversaw
the Development academy team for the texas Rush
before coming to the IMG Soccer academy.
deveLopING The NexT GeNerATIoN
Dean’s goal for the IMG Soccer academy is
simple – help student-athletes reach their full
potential.
“It’s all about player development,” he said. “If
we develop quality players, team success will be
a by-product. that said, individual development is
critical, but no one player ever comes before the
team.”
Dean and his staff work with each player on
an individual basis to not only create a plan for
improvement, but determine the best direction
after graduating from IMG academies, whether
it’s the professional route, D-I college or smaller
school. add in the strong relationship with the U.S.
Soccer U-17 Residency team, which trains on the
IMG academies’ campus, and IMG Soccer academy
Getting to know Scott Dean…
Favorite player:
I’ll give a few. George best, franz beckenbauer
and lionel Messi. that’s a good mix
of old and new.
Favorite club:
I really enjoy watching the style of arsenal
and barcelona.
Hobbies:
I like to golf. My low round is about 82. and
relaxing at the beach.
Most memorable attended sporting event:
the ’94 World Cup final. We were 30 rows
up and in the same row as Pele. We were
on the same side as the penalty kicks
when baggio airmailed it.
If I wasn’t a soccer coach:
I’d be coaching basketball or be an entrepreneur.
Best player he’s coached:
andy Williams (Real Salt lake). He played
for Jamaica in the ’98 World Cup and is in
his 15th year in MlS. He is the most technically
gifted player I’ve ever coached.
players have the opportunity to fulfill any of their
dreams. Some will even follow in the footsteps of
many before them by representing their country on
the world’s stage.
“they have to have the desire to put in the
hours to become a better player. they have to be
dedicated. Ultimately, though, we want as many
of our student-athletes as possible wearing their
country’s colors.”
for as long as he can remember, Gabriel
nunez has dreamed of representing his home
country of el Salvador on the international soccer
stage.
Dominating local youth competition, nunez convinced
his parents that for him to reach his full
potential, he needed to leave the country. at 14
years old and without knowing anyone on campus,
nunez enrolled at the IMG Soccer academy.
four years later, nunez captains the IMG Soccer
academy U-18 team and holds a spot in the el
Salvador U-20 national team player pool.
“I didn’t really mind leaving,” nunez remembers.
“the biggest change was soccer-wise. I was
always the best player on my teams in el Salvador.
at IMG, there are a lot of talented people and
I didn’t play much at first, but I stayed with it. I
know I’m on the right path.”
Having played for the el Salvador U-17 team,
nunez was told to keep developing his game at
the IMG Soccer academy. He would send daily
updates to his nation’s soccer governing body
about how he was improving. His diligence paid
off in the form of a call-up to the el Salvador
U-20 training camp.
“It’s a huge honor to wear your nation’s jersey,”
he said. “It’s amazing.”
after his playing days are over, nunez wants to
bring a version of IMG academies to his home
country.
“I’ve had an amazing opportunity to reach my
dreams,” he said. “I want to give others the same
opportunity.”
In fall 2012, Morrish will enroll at Vanderbilt
“that stuff doesn’t gross me out at all,” she said.
“I love science.”
Carrying a 3.8 GPa, Morrish has kept school at
once blair gavin was introduced
to the game of soccer at an early
age, there was one thing he knew:
he wanted to keep playing soccer.
to this day, that is precisely what
he is doing.
blair played soccer with Sereno, at the time,
the no. 1 nationally-ranked team winning which
won back-to-back-to-back-to-back arizona state
cups. He is also an alumni of the IMG Soccer
academy where he has his number ‘5’ jersey
retired, and has played for the University of akron
Zips, leading the team to runner-up in the 2009
national Championship.
now, Gavin is showing his skill with MlS
club Chivas USa after being drafted no. 10
overall in the 2010 SuperDraft. IMG academies
recently spoke with Gavin to catch up with one of
the IMG Soccer academy’s most distinguished
alums.
...IMG Academies helping your soccer development:
It helped me mature as an athlete. While at IMG
I was living away from my parents, and kind of getting
the whole college feel. on top of that, it is a professional
environment where they have plenty of equipment,
everything is set up for you, and all of the fields
are just perfect. the whole facility just sets you up
for success. the coaches they have are great and you
can go out and stay as long as you please, until it gets
dark if you really want to.
...getting the ball rolling:
When I was younger, my parents enrolled
me in soccer. I instantly fell in love with the
sport, and after that it was history. It has
always been the sport that I wanted to take to
the next level. I played a little bit of baseball
and basketball growing up, but that stuff was
just for fun and was an activity, whereas soccer
was serious.
...the rookie season:
I started off really well. I played in 15 or 16 games, but that kind of
got thrown off course by a hamstring injury. It was unfortunate, but
injuries do happen. It was tough, because you always want to be out
there, especially when you are playing well, but it was a tough lesson
that I took a lot from. I took some of the things that I learned from
that injury and applied it to this season.
...biggest difference between college and MLS:
In the MlS, you have to have an idea of what
you are going to do with the ball before you
get it. In college, you may get the ball and
make something up on the spot, but in the
pros you have to have 2 or 3 options and
then know what you are going to do if one
of your options closes. It is just a lot more
thinking, being smart, body positioning,
figuring out how to play an opponent
differently if he is faster than you. It is still
all about details, and they count the most.
I always had the goal to play college soccer. When
I played with the Sereno soccer club, I got plenty of
exposure, and when I came to IMG I began to realize
what colleges I would be able to go to. akron took a
look at me and some other guys when I was at IMG
academies, and I guess they liked what they saw.
once our soccer program at akron started to do really
well it started to get pretty serious.
Blair
Gavin
on...
...continuing to move up to the next level:
...best moment thus far:
My debut in MlS for Chivas USa
against the l.a. Galaxy. obviously,
you always dream about becoming
a pro , but until you actually play in
your first game where the lights are
on you, and you see all the people
sitting and watching you play you
don’t realize it. You are kind of in
awe. to this day, that is one of my
favorite memories that I will always
take with me.
...a message to IMG Soccer Academy students:
take advantage of the resources you have available. You
have some of the best coaches in the country that are
always willing to help you. they have been at the highest
level to learn from the best. You have everything you need,
so if your dream is to make it professionally, go for it, you
have the chance to work at it every day, so you might as
well soak it in and become the best that you can.
