Aberdeen Journal, Thursday 5th January 1950
"They Tried to Blackmail a Neighbour"
"A warning about the seriousness of trying to extort money by blackmail was given by Sheriff Laing in Aberdeen yesterday when three
young men pleaded guilty to committing such an offence against a neighbour."
"If you had been older men I would have sent you to prison for a substantial period without the slightest hesitation" The Sheriff said.
"Your conduct, in a sense was more foolish than criminal."
"Eric Smith, unemployed, 9 Northfield Place, was fined £12; John Watt Mitchell Irvine, apprentice compositor, 8 Northfield Place, was
fined £10; and George Brebner, laboratory assistant, 91 Whitehall Place, was placed on probation for twelve months and ordered to find
£8 caution."
"The Indictment -- The indictment against the three accused stated that, while acting together in Northfield Place, or elsewhere in
Aberdeen, they wrote and posted, or caused to be posted, a letter to a resident in Northfield Place. The terms of the letter were that:"
"Your unlawful dealings of the past few years would doubtless interest your employer, the police, and the Brotherhood of which you are
an esteemed member."
"The consequences if such information is divulged are obvious, and would have a serious effect on your future."
"These facts, together with some conclusive evidence acquired, need not be disclosed if your co-operation is forthcoming."
"For the sum of £75 you may rest assured that this matter will be closed. At exactly 9 p.m. on Monday, December 19, you will place the
money in a sealed envelope in the directory of the Albert Street telephone kiosk."
"These directions must be strictly adhered to or action will be taken as implied."
