Assessing Sufficient Ability
• The focus under prong three should be on
potential, not actual, ability of current and
admitted underrepresented students to
form varsity teams.
• Indications of ability include:
– Athletic experience and accomplishments in
interscholastic, club or intramural competition;
– Participation in other sports with similar skills
and abilities required;
– Self-assessment of the ability to compete;
– Tryouts in the particular sport in which there
is an interest; and
– Opinions of coaches, administrators, and
athletes regarding whether interested students
have the potential to sustain a varsity team.
