DEFINITION OF DIVISION RATINGS
The five divisional ratings used for all festivals are defined as follows:
DIVISION I will represent an excellent level of performance and musicianship for the
event.
DIVISION II will represent a good performance, but not worthy of the highest rating
because of minor defects in performance or ineffective interpretation. Shows much accomplishment and
promise.
DIVISION III will represent a fair performance, but not outstanding. Shows accomplishment and promise, but
is lacking in some essential qualities.
DIVISION IV will represent a poor performance lacking in many essential qualities.
DIVISION V will represent an unsatisfactory performance.
Adjudicators should adhere to the descriptions of the various ratings as defined and should feel free to use all
five ratings.
The adjudicator is especially requested to be consistent between the marks of A, B, C, etc., which are placed in
the large squares after the first five headings, and in the final rating which is placed at the top of the sheet. A
predominance of grades determines the rating. A first division (I) rating must have at least three (3) A’s. A
second division (II) rating must have at least three (3) B’s. A third division (III) rating must have at least three
(3) C’s, etc. Please BE SURE TO CHECK and RECHECK for inconsistency on this point before signing the
rating sheet. Any inconsistency is difficult, if not impossible to explain. Such sheets will be returned to the
adjudicator for correction and adjustment.
Festival Officials – NOT ADJUDICATORS – are responsible for interpretation and implementation of all
festival rules.
